Spring Game Idea

https://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/2023/04/dan-lanning-not-opposed-to-oregon-ducks-playing-future-spring-games-against-another-team.html

Appears momentum is gaining for Spring Games to be between different teams.

What team would make a perfect Spring opponent for UO?  Nevada?  San Jose St?  PSU?

Yeah, I've been seeing several teams thinking about this. Sounds interesting. I think any of those, would work. I guess I'd have to see what format they would use.

Re: Spring Game Idea

👍

I like Portland State except not when we play them in a regular season game. But it appears they would like to do the same with osu. So it may be more than one team.

Obviously it will be very controlled and not like a "real" game... especially on hitting / tackling i.e.some backup linebacker on Portland State injures Oregon's starting QB.

My ONLY concern and it is all relative, but Oregon losing its star player has much bigger consequences ($$$) than Portland State losing their star player.

Yet it is football...players get injured and lost for the season doing a routine practice drill.

I hadn't heard about this. Sounds like a good idea.

Agree with Ducks Reign that it has its' risks. I am not in favor of it as some nobody that wants to get drafted lays a cheap shot on a star player to become known. The star goes out and the nobody gets a 15 yard penalty? Nothing to gain for the Ducks doing this, as they will have to pay teams to play in the spring game. The top four don't do it, so why should the Ducks?  Continue to educate the players as both sides of the ball are better than some chump team coming in. Apologies to Portland State who have nothing to lose. Bad idea!

Did you even read the original article?

None other than Nick Saban said it was a "good idea". And Kirby Smart was "open to it".

Just sayin'.

Re: Spring Game Idea

I'm all for it.

There's plenty of time before the season for any minor injuries to heal up. It's not like they're going to go full pace and as mentioned injuries can and often happen with no contact or practice or what not. It never ceases to amaze me hearing about stories in the NFL and other leagues about players that injure themselves after celebrations.

As far as PSU goes I guess that alright, but maybe a team with more similar athletes would be better. Say another P5 school in a different conference.

Re: Spring Game Idea

I really like how DL made a point to get former players involved when he came onboard. It's good for the program.
