Oregon opposed to expansion of Pac-12?!

I subscribe to The Athletic and Stewart Mandel is highly respected...so I find this interesting that he notes Oregon as being one of two schools opposed to expanding the Pac-12...the other school is not mentioned.

IF what is written is true as to the reasons why the opposition...I get it...makes some sense...BUT I don't think it puts Oregon in a favorable narrative(if that matters?) inside and outside the Pac-12...

1) One more reason for others to play the Uncle Phil card as in "Of course Oregon opposes expansion because they already have Uncle Phil to take care of their needs."

2) Oregon is just afraid of competition since they already lost twice in the National Championship Game...so they are simply trying to find the easiest path to get back there as it is almost a decade since they last made the Playoffs.

There could be other versions but I don't think it is a good look for Oregon.

The one redeeming value for me if this is true is it would seem to negate any idea of going to the Little Ten...why would you oppose expansion in your own conference but think you would have a better chance at making the Playoffs in a much bigger and arguably tougher conference?

Yet as the article notes, the impending(😂) media rights deal will tell us a lot.

Re: Oregon opposed to expansion of Pac-12?!

Two things bolster this attitude- tv deal and playoffs.

The tv deal will be the same for a ten team conference or a twelve team conference, losing LA cannot be made up by adding 2-4 teams in whatever market to leverage a better deal.

The P10 will have a guaranteed spot in the playoff.  The conference as it is will play a round robin schedule with I suppose a champ game a rematch from the regular season for that playoff spot and maybe an at-large spot.  Two spots is more money…

Oregon still has the Knight money and an urgency that accompanies it as that window is closing.  Once that money becomes a trust, the program does  not have major boosters that can fill that gap, and Oregon under new leadership probably angles for a super conference membership.

The fallout from the tv deal will start whatever is to come in full motion…

No idea why Oregon would oppose adding another couple of teams, but this is just another reason to get this fucking media deal done. Absolutely absurd it's taken this long, and GK sure didn't help matters this media day. I've lost all confidence in him. I still think in the end, when/if the B1G expands again, Oregon needs to join if invited!
