Re: QUAAACK!!!!!! Ducks have a portal QB

I would have been ecstatic with two years availability. He should fit well into the system and we just might not see any drop off in offensive production. Lanning will need to walk the tightrope to keep Ty and Austin motivated and on the team. And as I’ve said before, if Ty can’t compete and leaves, maybe that’s for the best. I want Ty to work out but if he can’t rise above his second competitor …..

Yeah, two years would have been nice, but this kid can sling it. Something to watch for is if Dante Moore would also come here. He will visit, and word is he wouldn't mind sitting behind Gabriel and learn. If that happens, I would expect at least Ty to transfer. We have Akili Smith Jr. coming in 2025, so if Moore does come here, that might start a string of avoiding the portal for awhile.

Re: QUAAACK!!!!!! Ducks have a portal QB

He should be a really good QB for Oregon.

Of course I would love to see Ty be the QB and all. It’s just from what we’ve seen it’s hard not to see the offensive production slide. It’s nothing personal it’s just that this isn’t a time to be idealistic and put that over the reality of starting a challenging schedule next year.

Re: QUAAACK!!!!!! Ducks have a portal QB

This is great news!!

Yeah, he's a one-and-done but so was Vernon Adams, who is on my personal top 3 list of Oregon QB's ever.

This should instantly make us a contender next year in the BIG.

And right on cue....................Ty hits the Portal.

My condolences to all the Thompson fans. Good luck young man!

Re: QUAAACK!!!!!! Ducks have a portal QB

👎🤢

MAJOR disappointment but I have come to accept Oregon has all but opted out of recruiting, developing AND playing high school QB's if it requires more than a year to do so... Herbert being the last one and that was by committee of 3 head coach's(Helfraud, Taggart and Cristobal).

Why would a high school QB recruit even consider Oregon? So after 2 to 3 years of hard work they get to play one series against Portland State with the Ducks ahead 80-0?

A parade of 4* and 5* QB recruits have left the program in recent years never having the opportunity to play meaningful minutes...just recently 4* QB recruit Michael Van Buren decommitted. No wonder. Smart kid.

So now we have a one-and- done who will be on his third college team...and that is good for college football?

I looked at the QB's on the 6 teams in or almost in the Playoffs

JJ McCarthy - entire career at Michigan

Jalen Milroe - entire career at Alabama

Carson Beck - entire career at Georgia

Jordan Travis - played in 3 games at Louisville and been at FSU ever since(now injured)

Quinn Ewers - played 2 plays in one game at Ohio State and has been at Texas ever since

Michael Penix Jr - played 4-years at Indiana before coming to the UW for now 2-years

So 5 of the arguably best 6 teams this year in college football have either recruited / developed / played a high school kid OR accepted a transfer with barely a blip on the screen experience and made it to the Playoffs(or almost) but apparently mighty Oregon is incapable / unwilling / doesn't know how to do it?

And next year it will be EXACTLY the same scenario because unless Gabriel is hurt...no experience after him at QB. It is a never ending cycle.

Re: QUAAACK!!!!!! Ducks have a portal QB

DR, you forgot to mention some guy named Bo Nix who came in as a transfer and did not do badly. Also, the majority of quarterbacks that transferred out have not done well at other schools...name one that has succeeded elsewhere. I think Ty Thompson was a great kid for staying around hoping for a chance to show his skills but he did not look like a quarterback you could insert in any game as a starter. Wish him luck elsewhere, wherever that may be. Ducks would be just an ordinary team without transfers...that has been the case for a few years now.

Re: QUAAACK!!!!!! Ducks have a portal QB

1) Nix already had 3-years and played in 34 games by the time he got to Oregon / Penix had 4-years and played in 20 games by the time he got to the UW.

Gabriel spent 3-years at UCF; 2-years at OU(he first said he wad going to UCLA then switched to OU) and has played in 50 games already...never won a conference championship.

The difference? Nix and Penix played 2 seasons at the UO and UW respectively...The 5'11" Gabriel will have one season at Oregon.

2) I am the last one to get all hyped up about recruiting classes but two Oregon coaching staffs in a row have recruited and / or inherited all these 4* and 5* high school QB's only to then seek transfers.

So which is it? They are not good at evaluating high school QB talent? They are not good at developing who they recruit? Both? I can understand a misfire on a QB but it is misfire after misfire.

Yet 3* QB's Mariota and Herbert were developed into NFL caliber players.

The dots don't connect.

3) However I believe you never know unless you PLAY them for meaningful minutes in games...Oregon for whatever reasons refuses to do that.

When Oregon beat Ohio State in Columbus, the Luckeyes QB CJ Stroud was starting his SECOND college game...he lost that game but still had a great college career and now is one of the pleasant surprises of the NFL season.

Oregon has offensive scoring power all over the field and I am supposed to believe now Will Stein(but others going back to Cristobal after Herbert) and whoever else plays a role on the Oregon coaching staff, are unable to design an offense and plays that can succeed with a young inexperienced QB? Yet 5 of the 6 teams in this year's Playoffs have done just that with their current now experienced QB's.

In fact Auburn did that to Oregon when true freshman Bo Nix started the season opener and he led them to victory.

Honestly, who cares?

The quarterback position is the most important position on any team. The days of grooming a high school kid for 2 or 3 years before taking over a program are long gone in most cases. And don't pretend this is just an Oregon issue or only a coaching staff philosophy. Young QB's (or even grizzled veterans like Gabriel) don't stick around for more than 5 minutes these days either, in case you haven't noticed.

Ty Thompson is the exception to the rule and perhaps he's not the sharpest tool in the shed if he couldn't catch a clue a year or two ago that he'd never be the guy at Oregon.

Wish the kid luck. Maybe he will prove the last two coaching staffs and 3 offensive coordinators wrong?

Herbert was a 3* because he played basketball and didn't attend the camps and events that other QBs did.

Bo was awesome thanks to the whirlwind improvement and development provided by DL and company. We both saw Bo's numbers before and who couldn't of dreamed how good he would be become in 1 year.

I'm not sure who mentioned it, but Vernon Adams was an awesome QB with 1 year. Thank Goodness the Ducks picked him up.

You don't seem to have any tolerance for 1 bad play call or a 2 loss season and title game with the losses combined for less than a 1 td. Let's say we take away all the transfers this year. We'd have a lot more than 2 losses. I could only imagine what you'd think of a team with limitations at QB that were behind Bo this year.

You're living in a Disney movie fantasy with a Walter Matthau type experienced old hand type coach that only takes the local boys and coaches em up to go from bad to great to win the big game at the end of the year. We're in real life here and Ty just simply doesn't cut it. It's not just a college football thing. My middle school nephew plays on traveling teams and they go out and find the best players every year. It doesn't matter if someone was on the team the year before and couldn't be developed.

Like it or not transfers help immensely. This doesn't mean a recruit can't be developed in another year or 2. I'm with you in that I would love to see that and that it would be an ideal situation. For the meantime we just landed a top notch QB that unfortunately will be a 1 year rental. The upside is immensely favorable versus the alternative of staying pat.
