Attended my first BBall game this year today against WSU.
UGH! What an uninspired and lackluster performance in the loss. Another chance at a quality win squandered.
When I watch Basketball the last few years, I always find myself asking: where's the coaching? Why has one of Dana's hallmarks of success seemingly been forgotten? DEFENSE! ?? No more intense full court press, no more switching it up on D. Just straight up man all the time. And not even good at that.
And I don't know about you but for about the last 5-6 years I have no idea what he is trying to accomplish on offense. It's like Rec league down at the Y. There's just no confidence or aggressiveness with anything they do. One on one rat ball most possessions or dribble around until the shot-clock winds down and chuck up a desperation 3.
Anyway, it's been frustrating season AGAIN. Anyone thinking it's time to move on from Altman? I do. But I doubt he gets fired.
One disgusting thing that happened at the game tonight is the cameras zoomed in on a guy and Don Essig (why is this guy still employed? He was past his prime 30 years ago) says "welcome everybody it's Luke Jackson, one of the all-time greats at Oregon". And there's this guy who is so obviously NOT LUKE JACKSON hamming it up throwing the 'O" and playing the part smiling in the camera. I looked around at the people around me and said "that wasn't Luke Jackson!! and people were like, no that wasn't him at all. Was that some kind of joke? I sat bewildered. Then some 15 minutes later they showed the real Luke Jackson and announced it again. Let's just say Luke did NOT look fucking thrilled at all!!
What an absolute embarrassment to Luke Jackson, the U of O and whoever is in charge of gameday operations at Mathew Knight Arena. Someone deserves to be fired for that. I found it an ironic and apt metaphor for what has happened to our once proud and rich basketball programs at Oregon. Nobody gives a shit anymore. It was a sad day all around for this long time Duck.

It has been a very frustrating season. I was pumped in November looking forward to what this team could accomplish. They say injuries are not an excuse but I beg to differ. Case in point, listed are the players and games played.
Couisnard 24
Diawara 24
Evans 24
Oquendo 24
Rigsby 24
Tracy 24
--------------------
Shelstad 20
Barthelemy 18
Dante 10
Bittle 6
Cook 5
Zarzuela 5
I don't know if any coach could get any more production with a depleted lineup like this. The guys that have played in every game this season are going to burn out towards the end of the season from pure exhaustion. Jon Wilner has an article listing the PAC-12 basketball coaches 'hot seat'. With Dana Altman he gives the chance of vacancy at 45%. Coach Altman is not happy about the breakup of the conference and Wilner mentions about the long travel to the BIG TEN conference, the transfer portal and NIL. He is 65 and could possibly retire. I don't see him being fired so it's up to him. 68 schools are invited to participate in the big dance and to think that Oregon hasn't made it in the past three years tells me that this program is slipping.

Altman, like Saban, like Kelly, like Petersen, is becoming a relic in real time. Coaches are no longer simply about X's and O's and recruiting to build and maintain a program, they have evolved into ego massagers who have to build new teams every year and get them to buy in and play as a cohesive unit pretty much on Day One or suffer the defections accordingly at any point. I don't think he is ready to retire, but clearly I believe his time is expired at Oregon as they most likely will miss the Dance outside of winning the conference tourney.
Regarding the stadium experience, I am grumpy pants on that issue. The less I say, the better. I don't need constant noises and blaring music to pump me up. If the product on the floor/field cannot pump up the crowd...
Ready for the "OK Boomer" comments (and I am GenX!)...

It's ok to be grumpy. And the Matt Knight "experience" is surely a trigger for that lol.
