Re: It’s all on the Duck’s shoulders now

I let my feelings be known. I don't feel Oregon needs to worry about the rest of the conference. Sounds like the Utes didn't prepare very well, and it cost them. Hoping for a game thread here. I'm not going into the valley, and trolls will be all over O-Live.

The Ducks are the team that gets the ratings in the rest of the country. Their game is going to matter much more for conference perception than any other bowl games in the Pac this year.

So true! Everyone keeps talking about USC and how they need to be good. Oregon is the National face of this conference and I would argue Oregon being down the past three years had more to do with national perception than USC, who other than the Pete years has been mediocre consistently for decades.

I completely agree!  Oregon is currently the top team in the Pac-12.  Utah's performance last night in the Alamo Bowl was mediocre and clearly demonstrated the Pac-12 championship game wasn't a fluke.

USC has been such a debacle for the past several years.  I believe they're desperate to re-establish themselves as the dominant team in the Pac-12 and a contender at the national level.  I'm not sure Helton can get them there, but after everything he's been through, I believe he's deserved a third year as HC.  Besides . . . is there anyone out there that would take on the HC job at USC and guarantee them a return to their previous status?  I have no doubt there are a number poswer-that-be at USC crying in their morning coffee about not holding on to Orgeron when they had a chance and brought Sarkisian on instead.

The rest of the conference is not Oregon's concern. Would love to see a couple strong teams in each division battling it out every year. That's the best any conference can hope for. Seems that every conference has 1-3 teams that can compete with anyone in the country. The athletic department is doing a great job in making sure Oregon is one of those teams in multiple sports. It's good to be a Duck fan

I do believe that while the conference image is not our primary concern by any means, that it is a critical component.  Perhaps not from the perspective of the players, or the fans--those are limited perspectives in most cases--but from that of many coaches and most certainly the AD and Univ Administration.  If it wasn't so, the Big 10 and SEC would not have worked so hard to create their images of excellence and broadcast that belief more or less in unison.  The conference image plays a HUGE role in media negotiations, media commentary read by the rest of the nation, TV placement, bowl agreements and ultimately in how much money is available for distribution to each school.  That last then plays a huge role in how successful the conference can be going forward.  Thus I am left wondering what level of stupidity, lethargy or corruption exists at the level of the conference presidents that they would allow a totally self-interested incompetent like Scott to continue as the face and guiding light of the conference--a conference that among other things views itself as academically superior and more diverse in the sporting element?
