I've been surprised there hasn't been more of a competition until now. This is all coming from 1 scrimmage so perhaps this is much to do about nothing. Thompson presumably has more upside, but do you want a true freshman going up against the Buckeyes D on the road 2 games in? I'm guessing Brown will still be the starter. Let's just hope a clear starter is determined early in the season and this doesn't drag out.

I think Ty is probably the better QB right now, but Mario will never start a freshman there, imo. Actually, if he is the better QB, I say put him in against Fresno if Brown struggles at all, and see what he can do. I'm fine with him going against the Buckeyes if he is indeed the better QB.

Just for giggles, I looked this up. These are some of the successful freshman QBs. Some didn't take over until 4 or 5 games into the seasons, and others started from day 1..

This time of year my primary source which I trust the most are the "Practice Reports" via Go Ducks and Rob Moseley.
Now for the most part they are very objective as everyone presents a united front and "every player is improving." But it is a first hand account of what happened in practice.
Plus the video interviews are a nice feature...in the case of today's practice those interviews are Moorhead, Johnson, Bass, Cardwell and McGee.
Nothing stirs a fan base and generates more clicks for a writer than a "quarterback battle."
For me, I am just glad that since how many years now, it looks like we have 2 and maybe 3 QB's who can play... Cristobal has spoken of the improvements Butterfield has made too.

Quandary on how far this team projects to go…. From the preseason reports the Ducks are a two loss team. As a two loss team that will contend for the conference crown, do you lose two with AB or with a FR QB? If the difference between a senior and true freshman is *that close,* I roll the dice on the youngsters…. I get MC going with experience, so it appears to be a good problem to have…

If Ty is consistently playing better I'm definitely okay going with a true FR. I'll still stick with experience if both QB's are close though.
I'm not sure we'll get a definitive answer on who's going to start. Cristobal said they all played well in the most recent scrimmage. Unless someone is consistently outperforming AB it seems that Cristobal will go with the experience, which I can understand.
It's not ideal not having a clear QB going into a big game early, but the good news is the Ducks have more than one capable QB. It's nice to year the talented freshman receivers are game ready according to other reports.

Brown will probably start the season but I think Ty finishes it.--Just a hunch

Yep, pretty good hunch, imo. Brown will start just based on experience...one issue we've seen is the backups not getting meaningful PT, but against Fresno we should see at least the #2 get some time.

tOSU is going with CJ Stroud at QB. He's a redshirt frosh who has yet to throw a pass in college.

Ty Thompson is predicted to be an All-American.
@DR You're right in that media loves a QB competition story. I'm not sure the ESPN writers really have an inside track on the situation.
If Ty Thompson gets on the field against Fresno State I rather see him start or put in a meaningful situation. I've often not understood the Ducks waiting until the last drive or two in blowout games to put in a new QB for handoffs. I hope they can figure out who's the best QB before Fresno State and not have to use the game to figure things out.
