Mario Has Left the Building

He is supposedly calling the team together this afternoon to tell them.  Expect the Diaz firing at any moment.

Re: Mario Has Left the Building

As much as I hoped he would not leave until he wins an NCAA Championship for the UofO, I don’t blame him at all if he does it now. Mama is the most important woman in my life and if I were in his shoes I’d leave to be closer to her, and immediately if she’s not in good health.

Canzo Tweet from 25 minutes ago  "Miami has finally fired Manny Diaz.

Mario Cristobal meeting w Ducks players, per sources."

Good luck to him. He’s going to need it - most programs are impatient, but one that treats someone the way they did Diaz?  x100.

Time to turn the page and assume the staff is gone 100%.  That leaves Rob in a position to take that wheelbarrow of cash reportedly meant for Mario and get a real name like Aranda or Campbell.  Think this is not the time to go after a Wilcox or Chip as those hires would be better served to put out a dumpster fire.  UO is on a great place and the right hire will lead to many good players remaining on board.

My only beef with Mario is that he was complicit in the way this went down.  Certainly makes Diaz a sympathetic figure as the program had the knives out but reserved the last one for Mario.  Optics not good is the bottom line for me…

Re: Mario Has Left the Building

I have to believe Mullens has already been working on options...and we should find out quickly about those options.

I will be curious to see how many assistant coaches, current players and recruits follow him across the country.

Unless he leaves too, I am guessing DeRuyter, who has been a head coach, might be so again for the Alamo Bowl in like 3 weeks.

If it weren't for the money, I think Oregon and Oklahoma would just as soon shake hands and skip the game itself...nothing really to gain by playing it.

Re: Mario Has Left the Building

Just read where Cristobal OWES Oregon $9 million for a buyout...I don't care where it comes from or who pays it...Mullens will gladly take it.💰

I agree with you and DR about hiring an experienced coach. Aranda and Campbell both seem like strong candidates.

It sounds like Cambell could be a tough one to pull away. He seems to really like his job and the program he's built.

Exactly. We all know people are fired and hired all the time - that's life - but I have zero respect for anyone who goes about it that way.

Re: Mario Has Left the Building

Wrong or right, a lot of people are going to be even angrier about his sticking with AB all season, right down to the last second of the championship game.

Yeah we can play "pick a name" forever but not every coach wants to come to Oregon.

The challenge of course is you have to recruit outside the Pacific Northwest and that isn't appealing to every head coach.

Lincoln Riley can drive within a 50-mile radius from his home and recruit 75% of his team if he desires.

The WSU head coach can fly within a 500 mile radius and get nobody!

Re: Mario Has Left the Building

I agree about MC being complicit in this shameful process, but we move onward. Go for the splashy hire, or see if an Oregon boy wants the job? Wilcox can't be judged on his time at Cal, where there is little interest in football, but it would not be viewed as a good hire by Ducks fans, I'm guessing. Rob will have the money, so let the games begin. Speaking of games, I hope we have seen the end of AB: however it shakes out, I want to see Ty and/or Jay QB this team against the Sooners.
