Read an article where arguably his best assistant coach(OL) has left for the same job at the luckeyes.
Remember, UCLA's buyout obligation($15 million) in his contract goes to $0 this week i.e. after January 15th.
A new contract doesn't look promising. I think he is done at UCLA.

I found it interesting to read Kelly's 18-25 record at UCLA is the all time worst for a coach there in the first 45 seasons.
Their offense was finally starting to look viable at times last year.
Chip's relative lack of recent success and lack of interest in recruiting won't help him land a big college gig. I'm not sure UCLA would necessarily find a lot better coach though. I can't see Chip getting a head coaching job in the NFL again. Maybe a position as an OC in the NFL would be his best bet. That or being an OC for a good team in college, but I'm not sure he would want to do that.

Who do you get at this point on the carousel if you part ways after this week? With DTR coming back it might mean Chip follows thru on his side and they finish their Bruin careers together while the AD gets an early start on the next carousel…. Chip heads back to the NFL running an offense or at Alabama as an analyst…

Chip didn't all of a sudden become an idiot...he is a smart guy. However I think what it takes to build a winning championship college team has changed significantly and he did not evolve with it.
When he took over at Oregon he had been the OC for 2-years already plus the coaching staff was largely in place and stayed that way...so he didn't have to hire a lot of coaches. Ditto with Helfraud. When Helfraud had to replace the retiring Nick Aliotti, he had to make a MAJOR HIRE for the DC position and he chose Brady Hoke who had never been a DC in his career and it was a disaster.
Where I think Kelly misfired on recruiting at UCLA is not making sure he hired elite recruiters to compensate for his lack of desire / interest in it. Good leaders hire people to cover their weaknesses.
But yes it is difficult to see him in a P5 head coaching position in the near future but honestly, he might be better at a school like WSU who "cannot" recruit big time but are an interesting watch. Heck, Mike Leach never wins anything and he is on his third P5 head coaching gig! I just can't see Chip back in the NFL...no specific reason per se...he seems like a college guy.

It was actually worse: He promoted Don Pellum to DC after Aliotti retired, then demoted him and hired Hoke.
