Where is he going?

https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/2022/03/john-canzano-leaves-the-oregonianoregonlive.html

I won't miss him since I never read or listened to anything he put out.

Re: Where is he going?

Pretty sure we know at noon today when he hits the airwaves...

Can take or leave him with regards to his on-air persona (tries toooooo hard to be cool and hip), he is nice enough, though, in person as he complemented me out of the blue once at a bar about my hair (which is a Yul Brynner cut, too)...  Had Anna over at our house a few years ago for a tv news story she ran on my wife's business, also a very gracious person away from the airwaves.

Re: Where is he going?

His show is now listed at 3-6 and something else is on right now.

He has a message on the shows website eluding to starting his own venture written and owned by him. Looks like he'll still be covering the Pac-12

I have the same haircut!

It'll be interesting to see what access he'll have to athletic programs, players, and sources now that he doesn't have the credentials of the Oregonian/OregonLive.

Re: Where is he going?

He's been there 18 years..always considered him better than Dwight Jaynes. He once called us the "cess pool", but I think he was talking about Luther

Re: Where is he going?

1) The fact his departure seems so sudden as in no farewell column makes me think other issues are involved.

2) However when your only "local" sports to write about are the Blazers, Ducks and Beavers...after 20-years I can understand a desire to expand your coverage area so to speak.

3) He grew on me...I intently disliked him during the Chip Kelly era. Yet in recent years the few times I emailed him he ALWAYS replied in a kind manner.

4) Columnists have a different different role in their perspectives than a beat writer as in columnists are paid to have opinions which naturally fuel more discontent. I remember many Oregon fans despising George Schroeder in the same role at the RG. So I never had a problem with Canzano expressing his opinions...even if I disagreed with them more often than not. Overall I think he is better at INTERVIEWING (podcast) than WRITING.

And I will always appreciate his having ACCESS to people he either wrote about or had on his podcast...coaches, administrators and so on. Access no fan boy websites have at all.

I was wondering what his access to the Ducks was going to be like as it was. I think the letter from Joey he released might have burned some bridges. Right after Lanning was hired he said he was going to have him on the show. That never happened and I heard Lanning interviewed on other stations.

I'm right with you on your third point. I use to despise him during the CK days too.

One of his biggest accomplishments was exposing Larry Scott. The Pac-12 is a lot better off without him and at the very least the story helped move Larry along faster than he might have been out otherwise.

That's a good question as the whether something else is going on? JC always seemed really stubborn and I could see him not being willing to budge in a matter of conflict with OL.

When I first heard the news I thought he might have taken a job somewhere else. Baseball seemed like his favorite sport, which doesn't have much of a realistic chance to come to Oregon.

He probably was! I thought it might have been a little ego too to think he was above the comment section. That's one thing I liked about Ken Goe even though I didn't always agree with his takes. He was just one of the guys and would joke around in the comment section.

??? Lanning was on his podcast on January 19th!

I don't listen to all his podcasts but I regularly check who is on it because he routinely has the "big names" on it pertaining to Oregon and osu sports...head coaches, AD's, former players as well as Kliavkoff and Jon Wilner.

I didn't listen to the Lanning interview because I don't care what he has to SAY. Head coaches all spew the same script in one way or another. After Cristobal's tenure and spending too much time hearing about his "process"...I am only interested Lanning's ability to COACH and there is still 7 or so months for that to happen.

Oh, I missed that he finally got him on. The day Lanning was hired on December 11th JC said he would probably on the next day. On the next day on 12th JC said he wasn't on today, but would be on tomorrow. It never happend. During that week Lanning did interviews with other stations like 1080. I missed that JC finally got him in January.

Yeah, you didn't miss much on the Lanning interview. He sounded kind of tired and nervous the day after getting hired, which was understandable.

I tuned in every day right before and after the hire. Now I'll listen in the radio. I work my own schedule and will get ahead of hours early in the week and then break up my days by taking a hike with my dog later in the week. I'll often tune in to JC then. He does have a lot of good interviews like you say.

Re: Where is he going?

Goe's tweet just hours ago implies (well, OK, I infer) that The O pulled the trigger. maybe he pulled a Darrell Aune and fudged an expense acct or something.

Re: Where is he going?

good riddance.

cheap, slimy hustler from Day 1. no respect for professional ethics, confidentiality, or privacy. every story he ever wrote was about . . . John Canzano. his resume ('when I covered Jerry Tark . . . '). his gonnegtions ('an NFL GM told me that . . . '). his hyper-moral crusades against The Power on behalf of the wronged (Brenda Tracy, Jane Doe). how he 'felt' about the latest 'defining moment' in sports.
all intended to do one thing--build his 'brand' and hawk it multi-channel.

my biggest gripe over the years was that he took up space on airplanes and in hotels when The O could have sent a real reporter to a Rose Bowl or Final Four or CWS to write real stories--rather than, say, a sidetrip to Boys Town or a 'look-who-I-know' reminiscence w a b-ball coach who retired 15 years earlier.

my bet is he finally overstepped the boundaries once too often--either with a couple of really heavyweight influencers, or a pure accumulation of years of misbehavior that finally reached critical mass. throwing my O today toward Ms Bottomly (UO J-School, few years before me) for finally kicking this hobo off the train.
