I can't recall Ken Goe writing so many negative stories about UO sports in the recent past. Even just a year ago.
Case in point is last night's demolishing of Stanford by WBB. SI has a career high in front of more than 12,000 fans and the big takeaway from a thrilling win is that the PAC-12 is a difficult conference.
There is nothing wrong with lauding big wins...it's okay to say a few nice things about UO from time to time...sheesh.

I know there are a few Goe fans on this board, so with my apologies, I'll just say...
Goe is Canzano Light.

I began reading KG when he first started at the O, back in the eighties. I agree that anymore, he brings a bucket of cold water to any success story concerning the Ducks. I always had the impression he rooted for the Beavs, tho, so I'm not real surprised. I think at least one of his kids went there. Maybe he sees it as his job to bring balance.

I have a brother who knows Goe personally, and Mr. Goe is a fusky fan. He may not be "all in' with the fuskies, but when UO is playing the fuskies, Goe is a fusky fan. He and my brother get along fine. My brother is a fusky as well.

When you said 'what the hell happened' I thought you were commenting on the Ducks loss to the Cougars. I couldn't believe how badly they played. Even with Pritchard leading the way, he also had six turnovers. Instead of improving, I see these guys slipping at the wrong time. I do expect a much better effort against the Huskies. I was going to blame injuries, with Walker's bad back, Lawson went down after playing three minutes, Dante still learning and Okoro is in a funk. So disappointed. But the Cougars had four guys out with injuries, too. Concerning Goe, I always thought he was leaning towards the Beavers, but had no idea he's a husky.

I kept switching between the mens and womens games, but started watching the women more to start the second half. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I tuned into the mens second half. They just looked lost. A bad loss for sure: hope they can salvage a split.
That surprises me about Goe. I never had the impressing he was a fuskie.

I've always liked KG and I enjoy his writing, both reporting and columns. he brings some perspective, having covered PNW sports for going on 40 years. Goe doesn't get too excited about a single game or event, whereas Canzano announces another epochal 'defining moment' every week or two.
and Goe's right . . . last night's W counts the same in the standings as the routs of Colorado and Utah; Lady Ducks beat Lady Trees by 40 last year and then lost to them in the P-12 tourney, and there are plenty of tough games ahead in a loaded conf.
Oregon men seem to play to the level of their competition, whether it's Zags, NC,& Michigan or Texas-Southern & Wazzu. Dante and Okoro disappeared last night. the slowdown half-court game revealed the obvious--this team hasn't played together very long and are still getting familiar w one another. all those turnovers were hard to watch. HUGE game v Dawgs tomorrow afternoon.

I've known/read Goe for over 35 years. He's seen just about everything and leverages his history in covering sports.
He's Colorado born-and-bred, ended up at Lewis and Clark College, and (IMHO) 'accidentally' became a sportswriter for the Oregonian. The reason I say 'accidentally' is that I've never believed Goe was passionate about sports. I think he's more interested in telling the story. And, when he does, he often puts his own slant on things.
His lengthy career as a sportswriter restrains any abundance of enthusiasm some of us may feel. He's seen more than enough times when things go south for a team, a player fizzles out, etc. Too many promises left unfulfilled. He can be guarded and pessimistic, but freely admits he is periodically wrong.
Yes, he does have his prejudices. He likes Chris Petersen and doesn't care for Mike Leach. He hedges his predictions for Oregon, while appearing more supportive of Oregon State. He yearns for Portland State to return to the heyday of Mouse Davis and Pokey Allen. My greatest bewilderment was his support of Rick Neuheisel; however, on more than one ocassion, Goe wrote about the comfort Neuheisel extended when his son, Justin, suffered a serious head injury playing football.
I can't help but wonder how his articles will change without the ability for readers to comment. I think he occasionally pushed our buttons and then sat back and laughed at us for taking sports so seriously.
I still read him regularly and will continue to do so. Generally, I like his coverage of college football. And, no one covers track and field as well as he does.

I like and respect Ken Goe. I just don't get how the takeaway is anything other than joy after the best player in school history has a career high in a game of that magnitude.
Tired of all the O writers peeing in the pool on UO sports. That was a macho win...

I enjoy KG's stuff. I don't care what he likes or who he supports - we all have our preferences and if we were all the same, it'd get pretty boring. He and my brother are somewhat friendly, and they've talked fuskies when they've seen each other. I can tolerate that - they (neither of 'em) are typical delusional irrational fusky guys, and KG doesn't outwardly support them or anyone else in his writing, that I've ever noticed. Canzano's over-inflated ego and his never-ending sensationalism, that's another story - all together intolerable. Truthfully, the sports section of the O is the only section I am willing to read these days, and KG is the best part of it, I think.

Goe doesn't like me very much. He made an ass out of himself those last 2 games of the season. I was pretty hard on him about it. I got a chuckle when he wouldn't let me in his QA after the football season. You would think he was a thicker skinned.

!) As long as someone is better than any and every writer on FishDuck including the jerk who runs it, I am generally okay with them. Now FishDuck is a fan based website vs a journalistic website so that in part demonstrates the WIDE GAP in quality of writing between the two.
2) My primary complaint with Goe is in order balance the narrative he believe he has to downgrade Oregon while upgrading osu. In many respects he is a journalism carbon copy of Orange Army.
3) A PERFECT EXAMPLE is his column today on Jonathan Smith recruiting transfers...apparently Smith is a miracle worker unmatched by any other coach in the Pac-12. Instead of noting that perhaps a key reason osu needs transfers more than any other school in the Pac-12 is because they have historically been one of the worst teams in the conference and the basic recuiting skills of high school kids is lousy. Does Kyle Whittingham "need" a plethora of transfers? If I wanted to spin it as negatively as possible I could suggest that transfers are not a guarantee to instant success and by and large they are unhappy people who either failed to make it at their former school or who quit on their team. I am not saying that is what I believe but at the same time I do not believe glorifying efforts to recruit transfers make a coach elite.
Go Ducks!

I can’t stand Goe and his eeyore act. It’s so old. I know some posters on here like him but I just don’t get it. He reeks of back-handed compliments just like the Stanford piece. He needs to retire. He is almost as biased against the Ducks as Daschel is. Goe away Goe

I completely agree about Ken Goe. In recent years I have soured on him too. I enjoy the links that he provides and that is all. And ever since the Loother comment to Goe that I disclosed earlier this month,a couple hours before the OL comments shutoff - it has only raised more doubts for me on his modus operandi. I saw your take on my thread and frankly, something smells fishy, Uh yeah, it's time for the old fart to retire.
