USC & UCLA Leaving Pac

https://247sports.com/Article/USC-UCLA-planning-to-leave-Pac-12-for-Big-Ten-according-to-multiple-reports-189450704/

Just breaking. This sure seems like a disaster for the Pac to lose USC. Will the Ducks want to stay in conference without a big name addition from elsewhere? College football is in a real state of flux.

Re: USC & UCLA Leaving Pac

A substantial kick to the junk of the P12.  Just lost the biggest market x2.  Cannot see how GK has any leverage for a better TV deal without LA involved.

Think that ther P12 will end up all but dissolved unless it decides to absorb teams like BSU, SD State, SJ State, BYU, Nevada and CSU and create new divisions and new (old) rivalries to at least keep the conference relvant to itself in the short term.

Long term, conferences are gone and we see relegation made of a Top 40 tier with divisions and a B-level tier with another set of divisions and a C-level tier accordingly.  Relegation occurring as teams win the lower divisions and lose out in the higher divisions.  NCAA is gone.  NIL rules and it becomes a university sponsored minor league.  At that point is when the cats and dogs start sleeping together.  Mass hysteria.

Re: USC & UCLA Leaving Pac

I wrote this back in May and it’s real unfortunate.

“ The college game is done. It’s time for the university sports programs to be removed from the university and for an NFL minor league system to be created. Universities will have to move to an Ivy League non-scholarship club teams.

It was fun while it lasted. I have a lot of great memories, some that I would like to forget, mixed with some blurry ones, that college football has brought me. I wish I could have shared the experience with my children.”

Re: USC & UCLA Leaving Pac

I was starting to have more hope for the Pac with GK at the helm and then USC getting LC and becoming relevant again.

Like you say JJ, it's hard to see adding any number of teams like you mentioned really moving the dial on a TV deal or perception of being a power conference. It's like the Pac and Big 12 would be in this weird purgatory between the 3 best conferences and then smaller ones like the Big Sky. In a 4 playoff system you might need to go undefeated to get in.

The Ducks best move might be to switch horses too, but I'm not sure I want that to happen. Picking up a game or 2 a year in the Big 10 seems decent, but playing most all your games with teams back east just doesn't sound that appetizing.

There's still a chance USC and UCLA won't be approved to move.

Barring that it's hard to see a great solution at first glance.

I’m fine with an NFL minor league system. Universities need to get back to their original purpose of providing a quality education instead positioning themselves as minor league sportsball systems. Universities can use the Ivy system, let the NFL owners fund their own minor league.

Re: USC & UCLA Leaving Pac

1) The Pac-12 should make a move to merge with the Big 12 if they want to remain a reasonably legitimate P5 "power."

2) If the Pac-12 struggles to make the football playoffs now...what are the chances it will happen now without USC and UCLA? How long will Lanning stick around in combined Pac-12 / Mountain West Conference?

3) The problem with adding Mountain West teams is NOT football per se(except many of their stadiums are SMALL) but it is the other sports are most often not Pac-12 quality. Anyone heard of Boise State basketball?

The irony of this is USC and UCLA football have struggled to hold their own over the last decade in the Pac-12. Right now the presumed loss is much bigger in name than reality...in football.

Re: USC & UCLA Leaving Pac

Big 12 already courting UO, UW, ASU & UA.  If that were to occur the P12 is dead.

The PAC-12 is dead now if U$C and UCLA are gone. No MWC teams have the eyeballs the LA market has. Might not be the B1G for Oregon tho; an article from BamaWire..how do you feel about joining the SEC?

Re: USC & UCLA Leaving Pac

JC is going to have Wilner on for a whole hour later this afternoon.

Some good info including that the Pac was all in the dark about this. GK is on vacation and Mullins and company supposedly had not idea about this.

His take is that it's Fox pushing USC and UCLA to leave for the sake of getting the LA media market. They lost out with the Big 12 departure.

The Ducks and Fuskies could be the next targets to add to the Big 10 with the potential of adding a "West Division".

I'm wondering if the geography is a problem with joining the SEC or ACC? The Big 10 is a little more manageable, especially if number of schools join in the west.

Re: USC & UCLA Leaving Pac

consensus among the chattering class is that Oregon and Washington is soon to foller. I think that would be the best possible outcome.
tower to Uncle Phil . . . time to upgrade the north side of Autzen to match the south. we'll need about 70-75,000 seats to play at this level.

Re: USC & UCLA Leaving Pac

Regardless of why this is happening it is a MAJOR move and the Pac-12 has to respond in kind either collectively or each school individually.

Losing USC and UCLA but adding Nevada, Fresno State, etc. is not responding in kind. It is a "loss."

If the Pac-12 fails to handle this subtraction with its own MAJOR move, then eventually Oregon will be a mid major non-conference game on Big Ten and SEC schedules.
