Canzano thinks Phil Knight perhaps could save the Pac-12

Interesting column and a perspective I hadn't thought of...Phil Knight getting DEEPLY involved in this situation.

Perhaps his final "big gift"???

What is interesting too is the apparent belief by others that Oregon and the uw are THE KEYS to keeping the Pac-12 in existence.

Hey like I have read elsewhere...at this moment all options need to be explored and I agree a 1000% with Canzano... that Kliavkoff should contact Knight and find out his interest level in being a deal maker to save the Pac-12.

Which of course begs the question, should the Pac-12 be saved(meaning the 10 teams remaining plus some)  or allowed to basically dissolve?

Might as well find out what Uncle Phil would like to do.

Re: Canzano thinks Phil Knight perhaps could save the Pac-12

It's a good question of whether or not PK wants to try to save the conference? The thing is this may not be possible despite his business prowess and clout. He can't just turn water into wine and he probably knows this too.

JC doesn't even suggest who PK is suppose to talk into joining the conference. Probably because there isn't a likely team willing to join that generates a lucrative media contract.

PK has set the bar high for the Ducks in hopes for a championship. I'm sure he would like to save the Pac, but it seems doubtful he would want the Ducks to turn into a mid major team in a mid major conference.

It's a nice thought and all, but this really seems like wishful thinking or more simply something to write in the meantime for JC.

Re: Canzano thinks Phil Knight perhaps could save the Pac-12

good to see Canned-zano still practicing the tradecraft that made him an ex-OregonLive employee.
"I talked to a ____________________, who told me that [fill in provocative statement that sidelong affirms breathless slant author is slinging today]."
no John. you didn't.

Mr. Knight has always been an astute businessman, not a sentimentalist. he recognizes a loser when he sees one. this is a foundational problem, and has been for a long time. (blaming Larry Scott is a cop-out.)

an insufficient number of people want to watch Pac-10/12 football and men's basketball, on television or at the member venues. Oregon football, USC football. Zona basketball, lately a resurgent UCLA basketball. beyond that, a few programs make short-term runs then fall back to earth.

where does Mr. Knight direct his $$ so that it causes more people to attend OS-Wazzu football in Martin or Beandip? or cause more people to tune to Cal-Utah basketball when there's 198 cable channels at their fingertips?

I suppose Nike could offer sweetheart apparel-and-equipment contracts to goose expansion and lure new schools to the Pac-nn, but how many available prospects add value, bring TV markets and fanbases who travel and spend money? Zags in basketball, fer sure. maybe San Diego St, Fresno St, or Colorado St in football. slim pickens.

my hope is that Mr. Knight, and Rob Mullens with his CFP Committee rolodex, are working their butts off behind-the-scenes to get UO into the B1G, if not right away then a few years down the road. I don't see any other path to Oregon remaining relevant on the national stage in football, or holding its gains in men's basketball.

Having more money doesn't necessarily equate with being relevant...7 of the 12 teams in the B10 had LOSING Conference records this past football season.

Despite all the hype, the mathematics(reality) tell a much different story...not every team can be 12-0 / 11-1 / 10-2.

I think being in the B10 would crush Oregon in football relevancy. Hey recruits, we play half our season two time zones away and this year we are at Wisconsin in November. All you fans, who wants to travel to see our Ducks battle winless Purdue?

Money is getting portrayed as being the key to success on the field and under no scenario do I see Oregon "overtaking" the luckeyes, Michigan, Michigan State, or Penn State on an annual basis. Ditto for USC and UCLA.

California recruits to Oregon at least are in the same time zone and games(Pac-12) are accessible via driving i.e. Anyone driving to Rutgers this week that can give me a ride?

Look no further than what has happened to Nebraska with a far greater football tradition than Oregon and "just down the road" from Iowa...oh they have all that B10 money, a loyal fan base and? No longer relevant.

I hope Oregon stays as far away from the B10 has possible but if they don't / can't it will be for one reason...money...not because they even have a prayer of mirroring the successes they have had in football in the Pac-12.

This is all about money. If you want the Ducks to continue to b be relevant on the national stage, you have to root for us getting into either the B1G or the SEC. With NIL, money will be the key factor in drawing recruits. We have already had some kids put their commitments on hold to see what we will do. Kids want to be able to compete for NC, and Ducks will not be in any position to do that in a weakened PAC. As much as seeing the PAC disintigrate hurts us all, the time has come. While much blame goes to Larry Scott, the University presidents who kept him on deserve a lot of blame as well.
I'll add that all this is driven by a bidding war between FOX and ESPN. Again, it's all about money..nothing else.

Re: Canzano thinks Phil Knight perhaps could save the Pac-12

And that is my point...Oregon will not be relevant in a massive conference. Maybe in name only but not reality.

Nebraska has been in the B10 since 2011. How has that worked for them with all that money?

Also I think kids these days are most concerned about PLAYING which is the only way to make it to the next level which is also a dream.

Only 5 active head coaches have won National Championships...winning one doesn't guarantee more playing time or even getting to the next level.

How many times do you hear recruits talk about going to a school to win a National Championship? Ditto in basketball?

National Championships are fan chatter more than players in my opinion. And when you are the backup QB on a team which belongs to super conference and not getting on the field...how relevant are you?
