Steve Greatwood, John Neal, and Tom Osborne were introduced to the crowd before kickoff, to a nice ovation from long-time fans already in their seats. pretty sure Wood still has his place up on the McKenzie. must have been an omen.
this was the O-line's game. Ducks ran the ball at will. might have been 1 or 2 short-yardage situations where we didn't convert, but I can't recall many. no QB sacks on Bo, and positive yards on almost every play, except that muffed lateral and a coupla times when tailbacks decided to run backwards (killed the 2nd drive & we settled for FG). owned ToPoss when it mattered, & that end-of-first-half drive was a work of art.
EUG game for our TE position group. six of 14 completions were to TEs, including only two passing TDs to Ferguson. ran the ball effectively out of the I-formation w two TEs, QB over center, and a fullback leading the tailback. Ferguson, Matavao, and P Herbs are sophs; that feels good for the next 2 1/2 years.
Yards per Pass Attempt = Bo more than 11, Hall about 7. Yards per Completion = Bo 16, Hall 10.5. nums are skewed a bit because of limited attempts & that 50-yard bomb to Franklin. still, this is what we've been missing since Herbs. again, credit the run game for keeping LBs close to the LoS & creating 1-on-1s for the wideouts or medium-seams for crossing routes & TEs.
BYU QB is a good one. made plays w his arm and w his feet. BYU desperately missed their star wideouts; Duck corners played press man coverage most of the way until the game was out-of-hand. Dorlus had another monster game inside. Ducks only got one sack, but brought consistent heat up the middle, taking away Hall's vision over the middle. forced everything to the perimeter, where UO had the edge in speed and talent.
add in perfect weather and a raucous crowd, and I rate it 8.5 out of 10. crisp, physical, well-executed football w few mistakes. pack it and take on the road.
I want to see more deeper downfield throws to WRs; we've got the talent at that group (Franklin has amazing hands). I understand we didn't need much of that yesterday w the run-game humming, but we will going forward. only three passes to tailbacks; two for a combined 9 yards and one that lost 20 yards. that HAS to get better. get some balls to Dollars, McGee, or James in space and let them go DAT. D-line besides Dorlus needs to step up w/o Popo.
Ducks opened today as 6.5 favs v Cougs. Wazzu will be amped; should be a tussle. play like we did yesterday and we'll cover, and then some.

The only GLARING issue I noticed is like no pass rush. Heading into the Conference schedule this could be problematic.
That first half against BYU was EXCELLENT.

I'm back, lost my password, so I'm back with a shortened name.
I was impressed by the BYU performance, that's a good defense. I was dubious about our OC but I like what I'm seeing. I particularly like that Ty got in the game, multiple RBs carried the ball, multiple receivers are being targeted. It's almost as if these coaches want to get young players into action and develop them rather than run a completely risk averse game plan. What a novel concept in college football!
We'll have a game where we get bad Bo again, no doubt, and if it's against a good team, we'll maybe lose that game. We might also lose a game just because an opponent outplays us. That could happen this week at WSU. They are a pretty good team -- as is, apparently, OSU and UW. I don't think this makes us a contender, to be that we have to go on the road and beat dangerous teams. But it at least shows that the talent is there and that the coaches are able to put together a really good game plan and execute it while still developing young players. That bodes well for our future.
So I'm very happy with that game.

Actually, Phil and I were talking about you yesterday, wondering if something like that had happened. Good to see you back
