Don't see this working out for the long haul.  Almost seems like promising athletic kids (ahem, the parents) would be signing away their opportunity for an education for an overwhelmingly remote possibility of making it to a NBA training camp.  In this day of "Equity" in terms of promised outcomes (not being political here), my guess is that there will be some lawsuits down the road when Timmy ends up not good enough for the G-League but could have earned a schollie at a mid-major while still developing his skills and growing into being a man.  

Simply put, I see very few winners here and a lot of losers with the "venture" reaping the bulk of the rewards...

friend of mine's son was a goalie who earned a soccer scholarship to a great academic school back East. he was naturally gifted and put in the work, but nothing compared to some of his teammates and competitors.
there are day-long or two-day 'camps' for kids starting at eight years old. further downstream, there are two- and three-month live-in 'summer camps' starting as young as 10. think IMG wannabes.

two of my daughts played competitive volleyball in HS, and were pretty good, although not schollie material. the path to a college scholarship in v-ball begins about eight years old. it's a 12-month grind for the players and parents. school seasons, club seasons, camps, overnight tournaments, and don't even think about playing another sport. softball is similar from what I hear.

so football and men's b-ball are not outliers.

I think the MLB/college equation of go pro or commit to three years in college works well for baseball. yes, it dilutes the talent and tilts the game toward pitcher-dominated Small Ball (fine w me, who's got four hours to watch a 13-10, 11-pitcher train wreck?). but MLB has an extensive minor league system that can nurture an 18-year-old into a player ready for the pros in 4-5 years, and get a handsome signing bonus to step on that path.

personally not a fan of the one&done or even two&done in football and MBB. yeah, glad I got to see Deandre Ayton play in MKA, and so many others over the years, but in the long run it taints the game. the recruiting scandals just to lure the players for half a season, and the sham of Chad Johnson-style 'student athletes'. so far, the corruption hasn't made a big dent in the audience share, so I don't expect changes soon.
