Memo to Oregon's backup QB's

Thompson Butterfield and Ashford...

If you want to head to the transfer portal on Monday, you will get no complaints from me. I understand.

The odds are not in your favor of being the starting QB at Oregon let alone having opportunities to prove yourselves.

That is not an opinion but rather a statistical fact. For 3 consecutive seasons the head coach has done exactly the same thing... once the starter is determined, he and ONLY he gets to play meaningful minutes regardless of performance.

Look around...there are 3 of you with a recruit coming in next season...so you have a 1 in 4 chance of starting. As well, IF the head coach decides to bring in a transfer your odds get worse at 1 to 5.

Your desire to play will not override the stubbornness of the head coach.

Re: Memo to Oregon's backup QB's

I’m not as concerned with players hitting the portal, that is the new norm for CFB.  I am more curious about the coaches.  Moorhead will bolt for sure, his stock hitched directly to AB and the overall poor play from him with no recourse to develop the next man up.  Gotta think that Feld might be under the microscope more as injuries piled up…. Think others may end up jumping as MCs stubbornness and micromanaging may start wearing thin…. Still on the MC train, hoping he can figure out how to coach his coaches better and let them play the hands they have and also running out the clock after a disaster first half instead of going three and out and punting directly to a returner…

Re: Memo to Oregon's backup QB's

It's amazing in a game AB looked so off from the get and go that they couldn't get the run going. Only 63 yards on the ground. It's like every single phase of the game had a major problem.

The Ducks have some big receivers and often throws it in the ground. There were so many opportunities for a first down to an open receiver and AB was just off the mark.

I'm sure Moorhead will have plenty of opportunities to get an HC job. Maybe not a top team, but it's hard not to think he'll bolt to run his own show.

Let's hope Mario doesn't bring in another transfer QB next year. I've assumed for a while 1 or 2 QB's would transfer before the season started once it looks like there's a frontrunner. I wouldn't think a QB would transfer next week, but I would've said the same about Pittman last week.

In todays modern game it's hard to expect a team with a poor passing game to make the playoffs. I hope a different QB can change that next year. It seems there's issues schematically to work out too.

I disagree. T Shough was determined to be the starter last year before being pulled for A Brown.

You are counting the last 2 games of the season??? Brown didn't play one minute until the Pac-12 Championship Game. Yet Shough was up and down all season. Check the Box Scores...even the 2 games Brown FINALLY played in(USC and Iowa State)...Shough was still the starter.

I guess "meaningful minutes" is debatable but in 3 consecutive seasons the backup QB has barely had any game experiences...Shough behind Herbert; Brown behind Shough and Thompson/Butterfield/Ashford behind Brown.

Cristobal has a strange belief that backup QB's, unless the starter is carried off on a stretcher, do not get to play in games.

Re: Memo to Oregon's backup QB's

Herbert currently has 93 rushing yards, 30 more than Oregon put up last night and there's still 8 minutes left in the game.

It's too late already to get other QB's minutes or make the switch. Putting AB in at the end of the year last year made know sense.

I agree too that no adjustments were made. I like that they were trying to make throws downfield, but AB looked really off from the start, which warranted a change of game plan.

Was AB hurt last night. Late in the game it didn't look like he was able to run like usuel. I wouldn't even be surprised if he is questionable for next week
