Perhaps I'm jumping the gun, but the article from the Miami Herald last hour sure seems like the writing is on the wall.
Assuming MC is gone who do you want?
First, I think this is definitely an outside hire. The Ducks have lots of great assistant coaches, however nobody has enough experience to take over a talented team to compete for a championship.
Will we be in competition with Notre Dame? I'm not sure if they're getting close to a hire.
Fickle seems like a primary type of coach to target.
I know a lot of folks would love a Chip reunion. While the offense would be exciting it wouldn't be like old times. The hurry up was a wrinkle in time. One thing that might be the same is Chip being a lazy recruiter. I've heard a number of interviews from former players that visited Oregon when Chip was there and he was just like well you want to sign or not. No effort to make a sell to recruits.

I am so sick of coaches jumping that I'd do something like this: elevate Joe S. to head coach (big with the Polys, and Kalani isn't doing too shabby), elevate B-Mac to O coordinator, and fill in the rest. Not gonna happen, and probably shouldn't, but that's my knee jerk reaction...

The unknown factor is right now there might be the "perfect" head coach for Oregon who is content in their current job BUT IF the Oregon job becomes available...they want it!
USC is going to hire Lincoln Riley predicted nobody!

It's too bad Helfrich didn't workout as a head coach. That was always the idea that he wouldn't have left being local and all.

You're right. I heard so many potentials for the USC job including NFL coaches.

I mentioned Fickle, however that's probably not a realistic option with the Bearcats in the playoffs now. He may be less inclined to want to leave and he certainly wouldn't be available until after the Bama game. I don't think the Ducks can afford to wait that long.

If you want to go with a real Oregon connection, I think you bring in Wilcox. Think he would have the potential to bring Bellotti type of security to the program that little brother in Corvallis has going for them. With the resources and youth and a defensive mindset, I think he can reel in a good haul of talent and coach them up and leave the offensive fireworks to his OC.
If the theme is “coming home,” I would much rather have him than Chip, who I think would still see UO as some sort of stepping stone.

He definitely has to be a consideration. I'm sure he would love to have the talents on the defensive side of the ball.
Can he recruit well enough to compete with USC though?

Yeah, I agree about CK, but I'm not big on Wilcox either.

The timing of this really stinks. USC is hosting a big recruiting event today. Meanwhile we're awaiting the official word and an official search to kick off. The early signing day is in 10 days! It doesn't make sense to have it this early when a number of programs are making coaching changes. What would you do if your a Duck commit right now and having to wait for a coach to be named and coaching staff to be put together?

The last 3 head coaches have learned on the job with results all over the spectrum but the program has lacked consistency that it had with CK who also learned on the job...which is probably due to 3 head coaches in 6-years... Helfraud, Taggart and Cristobal.
I would like to see a head coach with some D1 level experience.

Let the speculation begin. Here's on of many articles on possible coaches with nothing more than presumption. Of all the numerous suggestions on who USC could get of course the hire of LR was the one nobody talked about.
I disagree with the article that Chip might be the fan favorite. This might be true of very casual fans, but I don't think so among serious fans.

I say Aranda as HC. If he won't come, Avalos (pretty likely he would I think). I think the players would believe in either of those coaches and you wouldn't be hit too hard in the transfer portal.
First choice for OC is Joe Brady, but would certainly be happy with Grimes if Aranda wanted to bring him. Either would be a strong choice with a defensive minded HC, and I think any combination of those 4 would keep a lot of recruits on board.
I keep seeing Harsin's name. I'm not a believer.

I really can't see Aranda being interested, but who knows. Matt Campbell is another name. What might Wilcox do without the constraints of Cal? At least he wouldn't be looking to go home
I'll also add Kalani Sitake...done a good job at BYU and is 5-0 against the PAC.

Pac-12 guru Jon Wilner has Wilcox, Tedford, Petersen, Harsin, Sitake and Kelly on his list.
I am all in on Wilcox but Tedford is intriguing...as Wilner notes, he is 60...only 2-years older than Kelly and apparently is back to full health.
