Montana State takeaways and questions

Takeaways: Dante Moore is the real deal. We knew he had a big arm. The question was did he have the decision making, which was a concern after looking at his UCLA stats. I liked how he got the ball out quickly to open receivers. He spread the wealth around too, which is a good thing to see. He was getting more under center snaps than we've seen much from the Ducks. Perhaps they're catering to Dante's skill set more?

A whole lot of players got in the game for actual drives. This was always a gripe of mine with Mario or even with Dan that the backups weren't ever getting meaningful reps. Part of the reason for that with DL in the past is that the team often took their foot off the gas in the second half or got into close games early with inferior opponents. I think the encouraging part of is that part of the reason we got to see more players is because the backups are that good and have more trust that previous teams.

The O-line question of whether they could gel together quickly was completely answered. Dante had all kinds of time and lines were being opened up for the RB's.

On the opposite side of the ball the D-line showed up big time. They were getting all kinds of pressure and hits on the QB. On the run the were blowing up run plays behind the line of scrimmage at times. Players were getting rotated in frequently. Some of the best teams in the past like Georgia and Alabama with Sabon had regular rotations like this. That was another gripe with Mario that everyone looked tired at the end of games with limited rotations.

Kenyon Sadiq was the real deal and looked like a man among boys. I think we're going to see him on a lot of highlight reals this year.

Questions: Why did Makhi Hughes only have 1 carry? Were they just resting him or is he just down on the depth chart with the other backs. This is the guy that had 2700 yards a Tulane last year. Either way this is a good problem to have.

Theran Johnson the coveted CB from Northwestern did not play and was not available. I head one source say he had a wrap on one of his knees pregame. Maybe he was just a little dinged up and they decided to rest him? DL will never answer questions about players injuries like this.

Was the injury to  the left guard Emmanuel Pregnon of concern? He did come back on the bench with his helmet, which seems encouraging. Seeing the reply of his leg getting bent didn't look good. Hopefully he's fine, because he looked absolutely great protecting Dante.

We don't know what James Ferguson-Reynolds the punter transfer from Boise State can do considering they never punted? Kind of a good problem and question to have. Long distance punts and field goals have been an issue at times for the Ducks in recent years.

I feel like I need to go back and watch some of the game to keep up with all the new players.

What a great start to the season. What are your takeaway?.

Re: Montana State takeaways and questions

beautiful day in Autzen yesterday. hot, but clouds rolled through all day, esp in the 2nd half, to keep things tolerable. great to see a 57,000+ sellout for Montana State--whose fans represented well.

just one game against a far inferior opponent, but lots to like . . .

Dante. we have ourselves a QB1. what he can do in the red-zone with his arm-strength and delivery surpasses anything Bo Nix or Dillon Gabriel brought. that strike to Benson, and the one Sadiq shoulda caught, I haven't seen from a UO QB in a while.
Ducks have moved the ball up & down the field these past four years, but too often stalled in the red zone to kick FGs (or turn it over on 4th). lost (UW, OSU) or almost lost (tOSU) games because of it.

O-line . . . like Phil wrote, looked great. no false starts, one holding call long after the game was decided. played a lot of guys. good to see Dave Iuli out there after a two-year battle w injuries.

Jordon Davison. true F. big, 6-0 230. I can see him becoming the starter before the season is over, or at least getting a lot of touches. the guy we need on 3rd-4th & short or N&Goal. you can check out his offer sheet . . . everybody wanted him https://goducks.com/sports/football/roster/jordon-davison/17365

D front 7 - good games yesterday from A'mauri W and Jerry Mixon. Tuioti is an all-conf talent, and we already know what Matayo Uggs can do. this is my biggest concern this year going forward. B1G football is about stopping the run. Penn State, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin.

Ducks shouldn't be challenged the next three games (what a pathetic showing in Reser last night). keep everybody healthy, get everybody some reps. coach em up.
