Mel Tucker

I've been following the goings on at Colorado with some interest. On one hand there seem to be some parallels with slick Willie Taggart, but I'm hearing a lot more justifications, from Canzano, Wilner, Crepea, about how "you can't blame him" "if someone offered to double your salary" la la la la la....

First off, this assumes that the main driving force in jobs and all other areas of life is money. Maybe it is, but not for me. I can't speak for everyone, but you can only spend so much money, after that it's pointless. My main issue is when a coach says to a recruit, or a school, things like "I appreciate the interest of so and so, but I am committed to building our program here for the great student athletes and fans we have here" and then 24 hours later, bolt.

I don't give a crap about market forces, I made a promise to these students, to this program. I need to honor it, period. If I then say to my bosses "hey, just so you know, so and so offered me $X.00 and I have to tell you, if it happens again we need to have a discussion", but under no circumstances do I go back on my word.

If people call Mel Tucker a lying snake, they're not wrong. I recall Troy Dye saying the same things about Willie when he left. You either stand by your word, or you don't. If you don't, you shouldn't expect people to understand.

My 2 cents.

Re: Mel Tucker

These types of hires are never going to look anything but sleazy. Meaning when a coach unexpectedly loses their job or quits or retires, etc. right on the cusp of in this case, post recruiting deadlines and start of Spring Practice. I do not like what Tucker did at all but what is MSU supposed to do?(and now Colorado?). You cannot promote an assistant on a one-year deal as that will crush recruiting. So now Colorado is in the same position as MSU just a week or so ago was in. Probably the "cleanest" hire is taking someone from the NFL but many of those coaches have zero college head coaching experience. At the end of the day, you can have all the contracts, clauses, promises, buyouts, etc. possible and ulitmately it comes down to a person's word / honesty.
