kind of surprising this late in the cycle. but with no Spring practice and Ohio State (and North Dakota State) coming to Autzen in early Sept (we hope), I can see a need for a QB w some game experience.
leaves me wondering about Robbie Ashford, and whether he'll decide to forgo college and sign w a MLB team. he's a UA All-America in baseball, and looks like a young, RH Darryl Strawberry.

I find the timing on this strange as well. It seems the QB room is getting pretty crowded, and I wouldn't expect a three-year starter to come to Oregon without a pretty strong inducement to start. Damn, I really just want to see Shough and Butterfield zipping it around. Those guys are tall and strong-armed. Figure Millen and Ashford are now asking questions, then throw Ty Thompson into the mix and it seems like the position is full.
For the sake of argument, if Brown starts, then Shough gets two years, then Butterfield would be in line for two years...it really makes the long tenures of Marcus and Justin look good. We have had some amazing quarterbacks at UO!

Count me as stunned as well with this news, but there is a pantload going on behind the scenes with a new OC and such. Add to this the very real notion that the ‘20 season will be canceled and now you have guys who might not see the field for another 18mo- an eternity in this game. Maybe if the season is canceled or abbreviated this is a smart move to preserve some eligibility for your true numbers one and two players...

I trust Mario and his process, and I always like competition. But what does this say to Millen and Ashford? At some point, don't you just rely on the recruiting. It seems like Shough, Butterfield, and Thompson are all viewed by recruitniks as top-shelf pro-style gunslingers...

I do trust MC, and there is the possibility there is no season, so who really knows at this point. I do feel Tyler would be a good one, and I would rather see the Ducks develope these kids than bring in a grad transfer. As for Ashford, I think he heads for baseball, but Millen might actually fit Joe's scheme's better than any of them. Hoping we get a chance to find out, but not looking real good right now.

a 'situationer' (as KG used to say) from Tyson Alger in The Athletic this morning . . .
sounds like the coaching staff and the team have confidence in Shough (Cyrus Habs even calls him a 'mini-Herbs). the concern is that Millen missed last year w injury and Spring camp this year, and that Butterfield missed Spring camp this year, and that the backups wouldn't be ready if something happened to Shough. Mario was here in 2017 when Herbs went down and Burmeister did the best he could, so I can see that.
I expect a little drop-off this season w the loss of Herbs, Troy, and those O-linemen. plus a new starting QB. sounds like Mario and staff, w that defense in their back pocket, have high expectations.

Yeah, it does make sense. Notice the O now has a paywall? Sub only...As for dropoff, I'm not sure: If Tyler is ready, and sounds like he is, the offense should be more dynamic.I'm thinking the O line will be almost as good early, then gel as a unit. The D is gonna be stout. I'm maybe not so sure about beating the buckeyes, but within the conference I think Ducks will do well.

yep, I just hit the new O-Live paywall about 30 minutes ago. a modal msgbox demanding I pungle up $10 per month and requesting an email address and payment method. 'Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further.' I didn't know this was coming; or I hadn't been paying attention at the least.
sooo . . . I clicked the circular peeps icon at the upper right, signed in with my six-years-old OMM creds, and PRESTO! . . . I can see and read everything. I'm sure somebody will shut off the legacy access eventually, if there's anybody left at The O to figure it out. sad state of affairs.

I've been on O-LIve a number of times today and haven't seen a paywall or anything. I'm signed in on my computer, but tried it on my phone that I'm not signed in and didn't see anything either. That would be real lousy if it's pay only and probably not worth it.

it's all gone now, but for a few hours this morning I couldn't get past a subscription window that asked for an email address and payment method. I clicked the 'FAQ' and read a long paragraph titled 'Why We're Doing This' about how ad revenue has vanished during COVID-19 and that it's never coming back. I tried clicking the link to 'Log In' to an existing acct, but that didn't work, so the transition isn't yet ready for prime time.
got the same thing on Chrome, Firefox, and Vivaldi, with or without ad-blockers running. guessing it was just a test-run, but O-Live will publish an announcement soon enough. I won't be paying the $10 per month (WaPo is $29 per year; NYT is free if you eat some subscription email teasers). just not that much content on The O that I can't get elsewhere.

This is how I feel about adding a new graduate transfer QB:
God bless, Jacksonville...
