Civil War

Re: Civil War

It offends no one. It is pandering, pure and simple.
Personally though, I always thought the CW name was a little dumb, but thinking that changing it is somehow productive is much dumber.
Next, they will be telling us the OSU Beavers is sexist. LOL

This PC crap is really getting out of hand. Really? This offends someone?

tend to agree w you, Norm. there have been English Civil Wars, Spanish Civil Wars, Liberian and Nigerian and South Sudanese Civil Wars. there was never any connection between the Platypus Trophy and the Undissolved Confederacy.

but . . . it's a 'tidal destruction and moral melee' (as a man once sang at Mac Court), and everything even close is gonna get swept away.

personally, I won't miss 'war' (Civil War, Border War, Holy War, Western Holy War, etc.) as a sobriquet for a game played by a bunch of 20-year-olds w a ball.
one of the all-time dumbest sports quotes in history, Paul 'Bowlhead' Azinger, after the 1991 Ryder Cup. 'first we thumped them Iraqis, then we beat them Euros'. bunch of millionaires in checked slacks. um hum.

Re: Civil War

And don't forget, our civil war was fought to maintain the union, AND, free the slaves.  What is now the United States of America won that war.  The name Civil War should be rejoiced.

I do agree, ORG, that using the term "war" to describe any sporting event is demeaning to those who actually had to go to war.

Re: Civil War

I am glad the name is gone.

Oregon's history as it relates to the "real" Civil War is having the distinction of being the only free state to simultaneously prohibit slavery AND Black people from becoming residents...so the further we can distance ourselves from that conflict the better.

Otherwise I have always liked "The Apple Cup" for the Washington rivalry and I would think the two Oregon schools could find a neutral name for the game which reflects the State of Oregon itself. Perhaps even add a perpetual trophy for it too.

Re: Civil War

This reminds me of when a past president of WSU mandated that the term “Wazzu” was never to be used again in reference to the school.  It took about five minutes of nodding in agreement before folks simply fell back into their comfort zone.  Same thing regarding “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.”

Regarding the term Civil War, it is what it is to the individual.  I will still call it that in casual conversation as that is what it is to me, but I won’t be an asshat about it to others who feel strong emotions and get easily triggered.

Re: Civil War

I don't care if they call it the Civil War or Apple Cup or even the Bald Faced Truth Bowl.  I watch for the Ducks to beat the Beavs.

Re: Civil War

How about "Rulers of the Pond"? That would be so exciting.

Re: Civil War

I never took the name as a derisive or insensitive label. It seemed weird, of course, being so far removed from the American Civil War, but I adapted to it.

I spent last week in Crawfordville, GA. Look it up. Very small, very rural, and very segregated. They love the confederacy, and it showed all over the little town there. Statues, flags, and memorabilia. We were there to camp and fish with the kids, but it left us with the impression that these labels and legacies do matter.

I am not a huge fan of blurring history, but I am okay with changing the name of our annual beatdown on little brother. We can call it Lil John's Folly, for all I care. I just want it to be win #12....
