On stadiumtalk.com they have listed the top 50 most overrated coaches. I'd add the link here but can't seem to figure out how to do it. Here's a few familiar names that we all know.
#37 Jim Harbaugh
#33 June Jones
#29 Rick Neuheisel
#21 Mike Price
#18 Scott Frost
#16 Brady Hoke
#11 Rich Rodriguez
#9 Tyrone Willingham
#7 Willie Taggart
#6 Steve Sarkisian
#2 Mike Riley
#1 Lane Kiffin

some Real Housewives dishin' going on there, some deserved, some not.
Neu-weasel should be higher. slime.
Mike Price was an offensive innovator who accomplished a lot w the limited talent he could attract to Pullman. his teams were always entertaining.
Willingham got an under-talented Stanford to the Rose Bowl, back before Furd was Furd. he crashed and burned in South Bend and Montlake.
you can get an argument about Riley all day long. did he overachieve in Corvallis, or was his Brasky tenure the real Mike Riley?
list is missing Mike Leach.

Overall I think to be fair the list should be divided between active coaches and those no longer coaching. Kiffin has yet to coach a game at Ole Miss... let's wait and see what he does there...to name one example. Saban was barely a.500 coach his first 4-years at Michigan State.
Otherwise...
1) 99% of head coaches don't win a National Championship and only 5 active out of 130 D1 head coaches have won a title...Saban, Swinney, Fisher, Miles and Oregeron...so that is a silly measuring stick on whether a coach is overrated.
2) Riley is not overrated at all. He has an overall winning record; 7-3 in bowl games...his only losing W-L record was in the NFL with the train wreck San Diego Chokers(bad ownership) He won 3 Grey Cups in the CFL...had winning records in college, CFL, WLAF and AAF...and in the Pac-10/12 he did it at the 2nd smallest market in the conference. Class act as well.
3) My #1 overrated head coach? Kirk Ferentz. He is the biggest chicken s*** scheduler in college football. Almost NEVER leaves the State of Iowa in non-conference games. I am glad he is on the list but he is #1 in my book.
4) Mark Helfrich would at least make my Honorable Mention list...what he did to the Oregon program in just 4-years still annoys me.
5) Leach has to be on the list...that guy did not even win the North Division at WSU and only won 1 Apple Cup. For all the hype he is given... what has he won of significance?

Helfrich won 13 games in a single season. He led Oregon to its best season. Thankful that he was instrumental in bringing in Troy Dye and Justin Herbert. He left a pretty full cupboard for Taggart and Mario...

I'm not sure about the precise placement for some. I would put Neuheisel higher on the list, not because he's a bad coach . . . but, because of the sleaze factor. Taggart too. I'll never forgive the guy for leaving Oregon after one season. But, he got what he deserved when he failed to deliver at Florida State.
I completely agree that Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, and Scott Frost are overrated and I'm so glad they're no longer part of the PAC-12. I predict Kiffin will not be at Ole Miss long . . . once they start playing again . . . and they realize he's not worth what they're paying. Sarkisian has a sleaze factor going too and he's lucky to be working with Saban again.
Frost I partly blame for Oregon's decline after Chip Kelly left and Helfrich took over (who definitely deserves a place on the list). Oregon's success the first year after Kelly left is largely due to Mariota, not Helfrich or Frost. Helfrich inherited a team that was working well and drove them into the ground. He can recognize young talent and recruit reasonably well, but Helfrich and Frost did not pull it together.
Frost was lucky to leave before getting fired since I doubt anyone would have kept him on after they let Helfrich go. I know he left right before the 2016 Alamo Bowl, but that game demonstrated how far over their heads Frost and Helfrich were in preparing the team. Once again they relied too heavily on the QB. Vernon Adams leaves the game shortly before half time with Oregon leading 31-0 and they still managed to lose. Jeff Lockie was so poorly prepared to take over that I actually felt bad for the guy. Plus, it showed how poorly Helfrich can manage the clock. The best thing about the 2016 Alamo Bowl was TCU's never-say-die attitude.
I doubt if Frost will be at Nebraska much longer after they start playing. That's a program that expects more than 9-15 record after two seasons.
I wouldn't have had Mike Riley on the list, especially at #2. I'm not surprised to see Brady Hoke and Rich Rodriguez on the list, but I would have placed them much lower. Tyrone Willingham had some okay years at Stanford and Notre Dame, but he never delivered at Washington. When he went 0-12 I actually felt bad for the guy. I liked that he valued education for players, but 2008 was beyond demoralizing. Too bad he didn't coach football again after that. I don't think football missed him, but it's a sucky way to end a football coaching career.

Yeah Helfrich road those Chip Kelly coattails for 2-years and then when those started to wane so did he. He was so good he could not even recruit AND coach a quality QB post-Mariota so for consecutive years he had to bring in graduate transfer QB's from the Big Sky Conference. In 4-years he took the program from 1st place in the Pac-12 North to last place and the worst Oregon W-L record in 25-years...plus losses to the uw and osu. Then the Alamo Bowl.
A friend of mine who had access to practices described it this way...In Helfrich's first season as head coach the players would sprint back to the LOS after every play in practice just like under Kelly; his second year they jogged; his third year they walked; his fourth year they didn't come to practice at all.
He was given the keys to a Ferrari and 4-years later he was driving a Dodge.
Otherwise for me Oregon's best season was when Darron Thomas led them to an undefeated regular season...first time in school history.
