I think many websites (different than actual physical newspaper) are weary of the time and effort to monitor comments. How many years now since ESPN abandoned it comments section?

With OLive and I suspect other sites, a minority of commenters(Orange Army to pick the lowest hanging fruit from the tree) ruined it for the majority. But remember, it wasn't just the sports section comments which ended but the entire site...which I never paid much attention to but I understand was pretty bad. The internet is a very angry place.

If you want a dictator like comments section go to FishDuck and its ego maniacal moderator, "Mr FishDuck" who proudly proclaims a "troll free experience" which is a lie because if you agree with him you can troll relentlessly...but the content is horrible...not one writer has access to any aspect of any Oregon sports teams. So you have amateur opinion writing at best but you can comment on garbage content!
