Understanding why Notre Dame is in the playoffs

First of all "understanding" does not necessarily mean "agreeing."

Second, while having no role in the rules of college football which are enforced by the NCAA, the CFP is a "company."

Here is a link to the CFP website which you can browse around if you are so interested. However, here is a copy / paste of a paragraph noted in the "Governance" section...

"The Company
CFP Administration, LLC, manages the administration operations of the College Football Playoff. Members of the company are the 10 FBS conferences (American Athletic, Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West, Pac-12, Southeastern and Sun Belt) AND THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME"(emphasis mine)

Just tap the three bars up in the left corner and you can read all about how Notre Dame's influence is sprinkled around "the company."

https://collegefootballplayoff.com/sports/2019/4/3/governance.aspx

My own opinion has shifted in recent years...I have only wanted 4 teams to make the playoffs in part because I cannot think of one season where the #8 ranked team deserved a chance to win a national championship.

Yet the role of "the company" is to make money for its members...make no mistake about it...and using this year as an example...Notre Dame in the playoffs is a better FINANCIAL optic than say Texas A&M or Cincinnati.

For me, I have come to the conclusion the only way we can break out if this "it is not about the 4 best teams who DESERVE to be in the playoffs but rather the 4 teams who can best MAKE MONEY for "the company" mode is to add more teams(8) .

Now that may increase Notre Dame's chances of being in every year but it will also add chances for other schools too.

While they will never admit it, I believe the Playoff Selection Committee starts every year with Alabama, Clemson, the luckeyes and Oklahoma "in" the playoffs($$$) and then finds reasons, if any, to eliminate them.

Re: Understanding why Notre Dame is in the playoffs

Yeah, college football is definitely a for profit company.

I've been wanting an 8 team playoff for a while, however have the same reservation you do. College football usually only has maybe 3 teams that are in the same class. The 1st and 2nd seed teams playing the 7 and 8 would probably be complete blowouts.

I was thinking maybe if it went to 8 teams the first 4 could have buyes and then the rest would play each other with a showdown of the top 6 teams remaining. This would make the first week a lot more interesting and make the 2nd week a little better than just playing all 8 the first week.

College football just a challenge with the nature of the game and the unlevel competition.
