Who's your favorite out of the 10 potential candidates listed? I'm going with Kevin Steele. A few on the list don't make any sense like USC's Todd Orlando who would be owed a big buyout.

Re: Ducks in need of new DC...

Internal: Keith Heyward

External: Kevin Steele

Heyward presumably would help "protect" Oregon from losing recruits.

Steele's credentials speak for themselves.

As per Heyward(and others on the list) never having called plays...I am not sure how this whole "play calling" really works on defense? Heck Joe Moorhead had called plays before he came to Oregon and yet the offense got progressively worse over the season.

Will be an interesting hire.

Re: Ducks in need of new DC...

Steele seems to me to be the pick, but probably another two year guy.  The only other guy is Heyward, who knows the program and knows the recruiting.  This is the role of a CEO- will Mario play defense and hire a safe internal candidate and protect recruitment or go big and get the name and maybe make the playoff which will help recruiting...?

Re: Ducks in need of new DC...

first, congrats and TY to Avalos. his D won us that Rose Bowl, and I think the P-12 champ v Utes also.
this is the culture at Bama from whence Mario came; assistants perform on a national stage and then move out and on up the ziggurat.

Steele or Heyward would be excellent hires. there's a strong case for Heyward because the P-12 is still a speed, passing, and perimeter conference that feeds QBs to the NFL, and the quality and performance of the secondary is critical.

I would cross Lupoi the Fake Injury Whisperer off the list.

Agree about Lupoi...I'm actually leaning to Heyward. He's paid his dues and been loyal to the program, as was Pellum of course, but I'll be fine with Keith. Obviously some good names...guess we'll see. MC creating his own coaching tree

Re: Ducks in need of new DC...

I am thinking there may also be a bit of a PR issue as well i.e. going outside to hire a DC and particularly a "name" like Steele.

With all the pandemic related financial issues...revenue shortfalls, job losses, etc. it will be a better look overall with an internal promotion. If Heyward was close a couple of years ago and he literally sat next to Avalos during games these past 2 seasons...he deserves the job.

Plus he might be in it for a longer haul than a "name" outside hire.
