Looks like our new DC is Tim DeRuyter from Cal.

well OK . . . the metrics are good in terms of the performance of defenses he's turned around. I would have preferred Heyward, and I sure hope he stays, cuz we need his recruiting chops and his player-dev skills.
Onward.

Maybe a variation of "if you can't beat em then join em" as Cal's defense has stifled Oregon the past 2 seasons.
Canzano's take parallels some of the 247 Sports perspective too.
Although I am far from convinced at this point that Moorhead was a "great hire" despite Cristobal apparently looking for assistants with previous head coaching experience.

I'm happy with the hire.
Taking somebody with a long proven record seems like less of the gamble.
That being said Heyward has been an amazing assistant and recruiter and seemingly deserved a shot. Some assistants do well taking the next step and calling plays and others not so much. I really have no idea if there was some concern about him on the next level or simply that Mario values experience more than anything. I'm in no position to determine if promoting Heyward was the right move.

and . . . Heyward's gone.
hope DeRuyter delivers.

Yep. Headed to Cal. I think DeRuyter is a good one, and he has recruiting chops, but I hate to lose Keith!

Coaching is a transient career. You are basically hired to be fired and if you can get a better gig before the axe comes down, you do it. Players now more transient than ever, so all a HC can do is manage the moving pieces as best as possible every season...
Heyward and MC most likely had a long and tough conversation as this process began with MC telling him he is not being considered. Like Saban, it appears MC prefers to pull in his coordinators from the outside, hoping they are the best of the best until they get promoted out of the program to a HC. So far, MC has two HC's from his tree already and I am sure he knows DeRuyter and Moorhead will be helming their own programs in 2-3 years.
Regarding the recruiting aspect of Heyward, it is a loss, but hopefully MC can make it up in terms of W's and hardware once the sport resumes playing full schedules.

I am curious but probably will never know what would Cristobal's reason(s) be for not promoting Heyward to the DC position? After all, even though job titles can be glamorized beyond reality, Heyward was "assistant head coach / co-defensive coordinator." Brought here by Taggart he "interned" with both Leavitt and Avalos. Played at OSU and coached in the Pac-12 for 8-years...with 21 players drafted. What else does a guy need to do to get a DC position?
I hope Cristobal has backup recruiting plans because in back-to-back years Oregon has lost arguably its 2 elite Southern California recruiters in Donte Williams(USC) and now Heyward who I hope gets the DC position at Cal. He deserves it.
Hopefully and while he doesn't seem like that type of guy, Cristobal is not getting to full of himself trying to copy Saban who has assistant coaches come and go every year because Oregon is not even remotely close to Alabama at this point and especially on offense.

It sounds like the interview process was grueling. I am curious as well on why KH never got the promotion. It sounds like Deruyter is a good man, but his defense is the Cal recipe and a lot of that comes from Wilcox. Hope he has a great plan and a full sense of our roster, because we can't waste a down of Sewell and Flowe's careers...
