As someone who learned / played organized basketball pre-three point shot era, that game against USC was painful to watch.
It confirmed how the mid-range game / skill set has disappeared...scoring is either a three-point shot or a dunk.
One of the very first things you learn playing against a zone defense is if you catch the ball inside the zone in an open space then IMMEDIATELY SHOOT...not pass or dribble.
Time and again Oregon perfectly "split" the zone at the top with a pass to Figueroa at the free throw line who then faced the basket, stood there and looked completely lost...only to pass or dribble. My gosh it is a wide open 15-foot "free throw"(jump shot).
And if he is struggling to do that then run someone else to the free throw line and let them catch and shoot.
I think I learned that in 7th grade...take what the zone gives you and by all means don't dribble right into the zone.
Nice to see Altman accept responsibility.
INDIANAPOLIS — Dana Altman shouldered the blame for two critical shortcomings in Oregon’s loss to USC in the Sweet 16. The veteran coach said he didn’t have the No. 7 seed Ducks sufficiently prepared to play against the zone defense employed by th...

The Duck/USC game was to painful for me to watch. When the Trojans got their 20 point lead, that was it for me. Looking back at the season, props to the players and coaching staff who gutted out the last part of the season to take 1st place in the regular season. The shortcomings started when N'Faly Dante went down with his ACL. Not having his height in the lineup forced Oregon to rely to much on shooting three-pointers. It was a thing of beauty when they were falling, but it exposed their weakness when the shots weren't falling. Looking ahead the Ducks will have some tall guys in the mix. Dante 6'11, Kepnang 6'11, Nate Bittle 6'11. They might start slow, but should be a force come tournament time.

It's nice to see a coach give an intelligent, accurate, and honest answer. So often coaches just state the obvious like we got killed on the boards or the shots weren't falling or something along those lines. In football we get the generic "we need to execute better" type response to losing a game.
Altman's a good coach and a lot of talent is coming in next year. With all the hardships this season things went pretty well.

Mike Leach could learn a thing or two, just saying.
