Is it time to panic yet?

In the last five days, Chandler Lawson, Jonathon Lawson and Jalen Terry have left the program. What is going on in Eugene?
Providing no one else leaves, the Ducks have Will Richardson,N'Faly Dante, Lok Wur, Franck Kepnang, Aaron Estrada, Eric Williams Jr. and newcomers Issac Johnson and Nate Bittle. That gives Coach Altman five scholarships to work with. It looks to me that with Coach Stubblefield leaving for DePaul, Jonathon Lawson parted ways. It could be that lack of playing time for Chandler Lawson and Jalen Terry might have had something to do with it.  I know Coach Altman will get this right.  Hope no one else leaves. Go Ducks.

Re: Is it time to panic yet?

1) As of last week there are over 1,000 college basketball players in the transfer portal! So this is not an Oregon / Altman problem at all.

https://nypost.com/2021/04/03/college-basketball-coaches-furious-with-wild-west-transfer-portal/

2) Part of the reason is the likelihood players will not have to sit out a year; may be allowed a one transfer no penalty opportunity, etc.

3) Personally I think it reflects a "it is not worth the effort" culture in college basketball. Meaning after statistics decline from one year to the next(Chandler Lawson) or you lose your starting role (Jalen Terry)...rather than work harder to improve, it is easier to quit and try someplace else. It really is an entitlement attitude more than anything else...in my opinion.

4) With regard to Johnathan Lawson being given a release from his commitment... certainly his brother quitting the program played a role but also his close relationship with Stubblefield was a key factor too.

Altman will, as he does every year, survive and put together a solid team

Re: Is it time to panic yet?

I agree that with DR that the culture of college athletics, especially hoops, is pretty much what it is in terms of transience now that the pain of switching programs is muted.  Players are more loyal to coach and teammates than to school, many 4/5* players pretty much never really having to go to class for more than a term before they declare for the draft or decide to transfer.  Makes it tough to casually follow a program and be somewhat intelligent in talking about the team.  Football starting to see more and more transience as well, but from what I think it looks as if most transfers find less than greener pastures at their new schools (with notable exceptions).

Re: Is it time to panic yet?

DucksReign, thanks for the link to the article about the transfer portal.  Had no idea it was well over 1,000 students.  It was a well written article.  With that many out there, Coach Altman will surely come up with some prize athletes.  Although football and basketball reign supreme, I'm looking forward to this week-ends Civil War baseball series.  All games on the PAC-12 network.  Ducks took two out of three earlier this year in Corvallis (non-conference games).  These games will count in the conference standings.  The baseball team has certainly surprised me so far this year.  The Beavers are the gold standard for baseball.  It will be interesting to see how the Ducks measure up to them.  Play ball!

Re: Is it time to panic yet?

Jiffy Jeff...yeah I think for some their attitude won't lead them to a greener pasture.

The proverbial "everyone's situation is different" is true...but for me I am less bothered by a transfer like Cyrus Habibi-Likio who put in the effort for a few years but sees the writing on the wall(or the coaches told him) that he was not going to be a starter vs Jalen Terry who started at one point and after one-year decides to leave.

bedupivi... honestly, I had no idea that many were in the transfer portal either until I heard Bill Walton say it on John Canzano's podcast! Then I decided to Google it for more verification just in case, the rare occasion happened where Walton exaggerated! 😂

Bummer that T Chavez and J Shelley are transferring. I would have been fine if T Mikesell was the one that was leaving. She didn’t come through in the Sweet Sixteen—missed shots and turnovers. For an upperclassman, she didn’t play as one in my eyes.

Re: Is it time to panic yet?

Until Pac teams such as Oregon can keep 3 star recruits as reserves and depth players we are doomed.
The team concept really doesn't exist up here. You should just figure that all the 4 stars will be gone before senior year. Sorry for the rant but losing to Iowa St was really bad in my opinion, showed me that we are a 3rd tier team. As far as B-Ball we need a lot more size and speed to make it to the big dance.

Ouch! T Chavez to UA stings me. I realize she’s from the state of AZ, but it still hurts me that she chose a school in the same conference.

That's a bummer for sure. She had a tough year. I wish her the best.
