There was a Moorhead update as well:
Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead has returned to Eugene following an illness that reportedly required Moorhead to undergo surgery and spend multiple days in a San Francisco Bay Area hospital, head coach Mario Cristobal told reporters Thursday. Moorhead fell ill ahead of the team's 31-24 loss at Stanford in Week 5 and was not available for the contest.
Moorhead, while back in Oregon, has not yet returned to team activities, according to Cristobal. The Ducks head coach added that analyst Nate Costa has been working with the team's quarterbacks amid Moorhead's absence.

I get it with MC & AB. This was to be a two loss team with one of the L's at Ohio St. Once the team cleared the Buckeye bar, it seemed that the sky was the limit- for the fan base, that is...
Clearly MC is putting any national championship talk on ice as he knows his team is not yet built for a run past the conference title and a NY6 berth. Now with multiple and very consequential injuries to starters in this first half of the season, he is having to get very young very quick at TE and RB to go along with a newer line group- and that is just the offense... Giving the hook to the starting QB after one L considering how snake bit they have been to date may flip the locker room upside down. AB can run, that is for sure, so my guess is that we see a run heavy offense thru the balance of the year where every game comes down to the last couple of possessions...

Good stuff, J Jeff!

Obviously at Oregon under Cristobal you don't have to play consistently well in games at the QB position (see Shough last season and Brown this season)...you just have to "understand" the position and probably practice well.

Or, you have to be in a position where none of the guys behind you do understand the position.
You have to recognize that when Mario talks about AB, his most important audience is not us. His most important audience is the players, including the backup QBs. He's telling them where AB is still ahead of them and what they have to do to catch up.

Holding the locker room together at this point is probably the biggest concern for MC. Think about it...
* You have a slew of super-seniors and players with extra eligibility, all who are of great caliber, some going three and even four deep on this roster. Not much playing time or reps with the 1's in practice for some of these guys who could start or be in the rotation at a different school.
* Knowing there is going to be attrition to transfer, he has got to lock in on "his guys" as he works the recruiting trail and is already assembling the roster for '22...
* The NIL situation creating another dynamic. There are ham and eggers on this roster and there are guys halfway to being millionaires all lining up to do the same job. Whether or not you believe it, money does change everything (Cyndi Lauper was right)...
* NIL Part II: KT has wads of cash, attention and continues to be hyped as the #1 pick in the draft. His incentive to NOT get injured again is probably gearing down his motor on the field... And remember that this team WON in the Shoe without him.
MC really has to grow into that CEO role and shed his tendencies to micromanage and I see this season as really more of a growth spurt for him and the coaches as well as the game with the money now involved... Ducks will be fine this season and have a winning record, but I am seeing now that the program is still being built, this season not a "payoff year..."

This is MC's 5th year at Oregon...1 as an assistant and 4 as the head coach...this is HIS team as in the majority of the players HE and his staff recruited. He has already won Division and Conference Championships plus a Rose Bowl. I am sorry but this "building for the future" is a bunch of baloney.
By any reasonable definition Oregon and AB are not improving...3 games in a row... Stony Brook, Arizona and Stanford.
We saw the same thing last year with RSF Shough and now with 6th year senior AB this year. The QB position continues to underachieve. They don't get better as the season progresses. But hey, that is "the process" apparently.
One way to lose a locker room is to continually play people who don't perform consistently well while others are not even given the opportunity to TRY for one play alone a series or possession.
If AB gets injured on the first play of the Cal game, whoever replaces him will have to instantly "understand the position" and let me guess, I bet his teammates and coaching staff will have confidence in him to play well.
Recruiting never determines the outcome
of a game...NEVER. So at some point you trust the talent YOU recruited AND coached or you don't. You figure out ways to put people in situations to enhance their opportunities to succeed. That is COACHING.
Afterall with Verdell now done for the year, another RB who let me guess, doesn't understand the position and give the team the best chance to win compared to Verdell, is now going to have to play.
And with a team as experienced and talented as Oregon(compared to oh say oregon state who is steadily improving) has a head coach who only believes ONE QB gives them the best chance to win...that says far more about the head coach than any one player or the team.

and so now the Ducks are back in the P12-North driver's seat, w Tree getting smashed by Sparky and beavs catching the Big Pipe v the toothless Cougs.
win out, and it's one game for the Rose Bowl. even w one more conf loss (depending to whom), UO is likely P12-North champion.
so . . . get ready for a lot more Brown, and frustration. and a plenty conservative game plan. Costa or Mastro or whoever is going to have to get AB as ready as they can, and give him plays he can execute. after all these years, don't think his ability to read and make decisions is going to get better.
was hoping to roll home from the Cal game this Friday night no later than after 'Shout'. probably not.
did anyone watch OS-Wazzu? did Smith go for it on 4-and-20 from his own three w the score tied 24 all?
