Buckle Up

It is not going to be pretty, it is not going to excite, it is going to look like paint drying on a cold North Dakota morning.  This is about as boring of football as I have ever seen since the days of Brooks-ball.  Bellotti ran fun offenses and Kelly changed the college game, so maybe I’m just spoiled.  Yeah, a win is a win.  But there is no reason why the Ducks of this caliber of talent should be playing catch up and taken to the wire by a one-win team.  The players are tight and the fans are quiet in the stands….

All that said, MC is the right guy, but he MUST loosen up more and let his coaches coach and allow for his players to shine.  My biggest criticism is that AB is not one of “his players,” more or less a hired gun to hold the QB spot while the coaches figure out how to keep everyone happy as they wait their turn.  He is a sixth year guy who I truly doubt is the best player at that position…

This team is tight, is vulnerable and I think the ceiling is lower today for them than even after the Stanford loss.  Playing not to lose, or for next season, is not why players came here or why folks buy tix.  Six games to go, brothers, buckle up and find that beverage of choice to calm the nerves at game time!😬

Re: Buckle Up

You make a lot of good points.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a team at this point that could very well lose to anyone and also step up and beat a team like Ohio State.

I think some of the frustration with the offense is the amount of talent it has this year. You have top tier talent at every position group. They should be able to score on lousy defenses and not go down to the wire every week.

You have to wonder if top offensive commits primarily receivers are taking notice and questioning if this is the place for them.

I'm still excited for next week's game. I expect our Ducks to open up the offense more, which they'll have to do to keep up with UCLA's offense.

"All that said, MC is the right guy"

Oh I am not convinced of that at all...4-years is plenty of time and...

*He has taken a culture of many years(not just under Chip) of fun to watch offenses and turned it into a buzz kill of smash mouth football.

*As a result Autzen Stadium, once considered a huge advantage to Oregon for an entire game, now has the energy of a morgue save a handful of individual plays.

*His game / clock management is erratic.

*Development of QB's is well, non-development.

I think it is time to stop giving Cristobal more credit for his recruiting and "values" than his COACHING skills.

Re: Buckle Up

I think we are going to see at least 3 more losses this year. Beavers-UCLA-Utah.
As far as last nights victory is concerned -Cal gave the game to us. There is a reason they were 1-4

Re: Buckle Up

I agree with DucksReign, Cristobal is not taking the Ducks to the promised land.

Re: Buckle Up

Brooks and Bellotti and Kelly won games by getting exceptional production from the talent they had.

MC is winning games by getting exceptional talent but mediocre production from that talent.

He's been compared here to Helton, but he's not that.  He brings in better talent than Helton did and he gets better production from talent than Helton did.

Ducks fans had it really good.  It's very satisfying to root for a team that outperforms its talent.  It's frustrating to root for a talented team that underperforms -- even if the results are roughly the same.  But the results are roughly the same.  We're in the national conversation, we are still one of the top two favorites for the Rose Bowl, we have the ability to knock off a top five team on their home field, and we still specialize in finding bizarre ways to lose to Stanford.  None of this is really new for us.

After Taggart left, if you'd told me that within four years we'd win a game at Ohio State, and at the halfway point of the season we'd have one loss and control our own destiny in conference despite a stupid loss to Stanford, I'd have said I'd take it.  And I will.

I don't expect this team to be exciting or dominant anymore.  We're just not that good.  Do I think it is a coaching failure?  Yes.  Too much on field indiscipline, too many mental mistakes (like failure to burn clock against Stanford and burning clock at the end of the first half against Cal).  Too little use of the offensive talent on the field.  No drive to come out and crush teams and dominate the game.

Despite that, the total picture is probably better than anyone else in the conference has.  The only team that looks like it should be good enough to beat us is ASU, and their fans have to worry about whether their cheating is going to end up destroying their program.

I'll take it.  There's been no hint of any cheating going on.  The talent trajectory is still upward.  I don't think MC is likely to win a championship, but actually, Ohio State might be good enough to win one and we beat them, so who knows?  He's likely to have us in position to threaten for one if we get lucky or get a transcendent talent at QB.  Most schools can only dream of that.  It's frustrating, but it's much, much better than Helfrich or Taggart.

Re: Buckle Up

If this team could play 4 quarters like the 4th last night, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Inconsistency has been the most consistent aspect of this team. I doubt we'll see Ty this year unless AB gets injured, so we have to hope AB can keep throwing downfield like he did, and Travis stays healthy. I liked Cardwell, he reminded me of Royce. Ryan Walk said the boos motivated them, but they need to come out ready to go and never hear those boos. We never seem ready to play, and sometimes don't wake up until the 4th.
MC isn't going anywhere unless he's poached by another team (LSU?), so as JJ says..Buckle up

Re: Buckle Up

it's Marioball. I've learned to accept and move on. in my mind, we had 'em all the way last night.

six more games, plus whatever post-season unfolds. I recommend the Calm app, esp the segments by Tamara Leavitt on Gratitude Practice and Breathwork. only $70 for a year, and there's a one-week free trial.

(and to any jerk at Autzen last night who booed the team on the field . . . totally classless. maybe switch your allegiance to the WinterHawks or WWF or something.)

onward!

We could, after all, be Iowa fans.
