Wow...WSU head coach and 4 assistants are out over vaccine mandate

I am simply sharing this FYI as I have no desire to get into a protracted debate over this situation.

Yep. $3 million is what I heard he leaves on the table. Also 4 of his coaches. Tough on the kids.

He didn't even address the team after he was informed of his dismissal? It's lousy for the team to lose the coaches mid season.

I of course have opinions on the matter, but am not interesting in debating them on here.

Now I see Moorhead is being mentioned as a potential candidate for the head coach vacancy along with Joe Salave’a. It doesn't look like there's any substance or insider confirmation to make this anything more than the flood of quicky news articles throwing out a bunch of coaching names based on nothing, but speculation or even less. Here's the article: https://www.yahoo.com/sports/joe-moorhead-named-top-coaching-173644835.html

The question is whether anyone on the list wants the job?

Given the circumstances it will be an interesting hire.

As well there will always be some respectable candidates because it is an opportunity to be a head coach in a P5 Conference.

Re: Wow...WSU head coach and 4 assistants are out over vaccine mandate

It's interesting that he was granted the religious exemption but the school denied his accommodation request.  That means that the school decided, in spite of the religious exemption, that they couldn't work it out for him to continue in his job.  Since a lot of his job is outside and you'd think they could easily accommodate social distancing on film reviews and team meetings, and since he's obviously willing to wear a mask, one wonders what the basis for denying accommodation was.

His players liked him.  If they think he wasn't treated fairly, it could blow up the whole team.  Hard enough to lose an assistant coach, but to lose the head coach and 4 assistants, over a divisive matter, could be a pretty hard thing for a bunch of kids to deal with.  It's a shame, they were starting to put together a decent season.  Maybe they'll dig in, sometimes adversity does that.

I'm going to say the kids dig in and play hard the rest of the season, but there may be a lot of Cougs in the transfer portal. Guess we'll see.

I hope so for their own sakes.  It can be life transforming in a very positive way to be put in a situation like this and walk out with head held high.

To me, losing J Salave’a would be a bigger loss than J Moorhead. Joe brings great energy and enthusiasm that cannot easily be replaced. Having a poly on staff is also a major plus.

Re: Wow...WSU head coach and 4 assistants are out over vaccine mandate

This is going to be a total rebuild.  Think there are going to be substantial transfers out and in and it is going to take years.  Wazzu, like OSU, requires a coach who understands the culture of a rural state school and that it requires much more heavy lifting than an urban school or blue blood with deep donor pockets.  Not worried if the school poaches any UO coaches, transience is the name of that professional game and UO will replace whatever is lost with decent and upwardly trending talent.

Rolo will be picked up off the carousel by a G5 program next season, my guess is he is financially secure enough to ride this out pretty darn comfortably…

Yeah, losing Joe would be a big loss. I hope he stays, but would be happy for him on a personal level if he gets the job.
