DeRuyter gone, apparently

So head coach and both coordinators gone.  We could have gone for continuity by making McLendon the head coach and keeping DeRuyter, perhaps, but I expect mostly a new slate of coaches.

Re: DeRuyter gone, apparently

Underwhelming defense this season but in fairness to him and the defensive players...the offense from QB play to scheme to inability to pass deep and other issues put as much pressure on our defense as the opponents offenses did.

Between head coaches, DC's and OC's alone we have gone through 7 people since 2017😱 Taggart, Cristobal, Leavitt, Avalos, DeRuyter, Arroyo and Moorhead...that turnover rate doesn't lead to national championships.

Also apparently Marcel Yates is going with him to TT.

Re: DeRuyter gone, apparently

I was kind of neutral on him as well.

The defense had a lot of injuries and had to be on the field a lot with our offense. They looked good at moments, but it wasn't that great. If Mario had stayed I wouldn't be calling for a new DC. I'm not really disappointed he's leaving now either.

Re: DeRuyter gone, apparently

I think our D won quite a few games for us this year.  I think in the Utah games they kept us in the games for a while but were handed horrible field position multiple times and simply got worn down by the offense giving the ball back over and over again.  Utah's offense got better and better as the year went on.  In the P12 championship, the D gave up 28 points (the offense handed them 10 points).  I don't consider that bad against a pretty good offense for as much pressure as our offense put on them.

I think he's a good defensive coach and I think if we'd stayed healthy and had a good offense that the defense would have been elite.  Flowe was a huge loss.  I think if we'd have had Flowe and Sewell playing together all year that we'd have had a monster defense, even with KT out part of the year with his injury.

Good points.

I really hope Flowe, Sewell, and McKinley stick around in addition to a number of other talented players on the team. With the right coach, fewer injuries, and a better offense next year and this defense is elite. Perhaps the only fix needed was a new head coach and a good OC that's allowed to coach. It looks like it very well might be a clean slate on coaching.
