I know opinions will vary, but I'm thrilled with this hire. Now let's flesh out a staff and get to recruiting!

I don’t know much about this guy, but if you two like him, I’ll go along with the excitement.

Re: Lanning it is

@KONA, I honestly don't know much either. His defense has been phenomenal and he seems like a great DC. I was under the impression he can recruit well too. I'm happy the search is over and decided even if they got Wilcox who wasn't my first choice that I was going to try to be positive about the hire.

Re: Lanning it is

Georgia fans are wondering if he’ll stay for their remaining game(s). Can’t imagine that happening.

I’ve been impressed with uga’s Def this year so I’m really looking forward to seeing what D Lanning can do with the players he inherits from M Cristobal. Very interested in seeing who he hires as DC and OC now.

I like that it’s a hire from the SEC and in my mind, a splashy move. Hopefully we can bring J Wilcox home after we win the championship with Lanning.

I second that, Wilcox seems like a good in game coach. If the Ducks were an NFL team I would've been good with him. Recruiting just means too much in college football to make it an afterthought.

I agree. As most people say, recruiting is the lifeblood of college ball.

Re: Lanning it is

I am pleased with this hire.  I did not want to see Chip back in Eugene.  He was great while he was here but he caught lightning in a bottle at the time.  I don't believe it would happen again.  I was cool to the thought that Justin Wilcox would work out.  I realize he's the local guy but how well is he known nationwide as far as recruiting goes. Anxious to see how many guys stay with the Ducks, both on the team and those recruits that we still have. In other news, not everyone is happy in Miami.  https://news.yahoo.com/um-faculty-hit-pay-cuts-202440004.html

Re: Lanning it is

Yes, he's known as a great recruiter.  Here's his recruits this year:  https://247sports.com/Coach/Dan-Lanning-3823/Recruits/?Recruitment.Year=2022

Here's his all time recruits list:
https://247sports.com/Coach/Dan-Lanning-3823/AllTimeRecruits/

Greatly improves the chances of holding our defense together and out of the transfer portal, especially the LBs, which is probably our most talented position group.  Defensive players will like a defensive hire and like this one especially, I think, because Georgia was so dominant this year.  So while I think he'll be able to bring in some top players, I also think he'll help hold a lot of the players we have.

I'm pretty happy with the hire.  I know, he isn't experienced as a HC.  There's a risk in that.  But I prefer the risk and the huge upside.  I want a coach who we know can put together championship level play on one side of the ball, at least.  I prefer that to a "safe" hire like Wilcox who might be fine but there's no evidence he can really put together a championship team.

Re: Lanning it is

Would have preferred someone who has head coaching experience.

His #1 IMMEDIATE recruiting task is to convince current players and committed recruits to believe in a guy who will be the only Pac-12 head coach learning on the job for the first time.

His #2 task is to hire a coaching staff... without ever having done so before as a head coach.

Recruiting? Cristobal soured me on its importance. Yes it is important but not nearly as important as coaching, game management, play calling and related skill sets. You bring in these high school kids; take a bunch of glam photos in Duck gear; revel in the number of * attached to their name and then do you coach them up or down?

I am a Duck alum and will support the team but it is an unexciting hire. First impression, and I hope I am wrong, but this looks like Cristobal 2...everyone assumed he knew how to build a championship team having played on one and been an assistant coach on one at Alabama.

Instead we went from Rose Bowl winner with primarily players he INHERITED to the Alamo Bowl with primarily players he RECRUITED.

Cristobal believed recruiting first then figure out how to coach. I believe that first demonstrate you can coach and then recruits and transfers will follow(Jonathan Smith).

Thus I am holding judgement until I see how he hires; what a "defensive guy's" offense looks like and how he coaches in games. Also, Cristobal turned Autzen into a "non-factor" in games...I hope Lanning can restore Autzen into one of the most difficult places to play.

Go Ducks!

Re: Lanning it is

I'm excited for the hire! Wonder if he'll be coaching our bowl game or staying at GA till the end. If he is coaching, I really hope he doesn't start Brown...

Go Ducks!

I just posted an article that confirms he will be coaching Georgia in the playoffs. Don’t know whether that precludes his involvement in the Alamo Bowl or not.
