In being honest, if this is indeed true, then thank you Justin Wilcox. I'd love to know his reasoning, but I believe Lanning is the better choice between the two.

Darn it. Now I am disappointed he didn't take it.

I ‘m mildly curious - in the context of all the they’re-going-for-a-big-name, Phil-can-get-the-Pope-to-take-his-call hoopla of the past week - as to whether Sitake, Kelly, Lanning and Wilcox were the only interviews.

Me too, Cazano was saying something about a mystery NFL canidate. I'm assuming most of the going after big names was talking to agents and nothing that led to an actual interview. We'll probably never know who they went after and who was actually interested.

It really makes you wonder why he turned it down. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's not married with kids so it wouldn't have been a moving the family thing. You wonder if he just likes his job at Cal or he didn't like the way the hiring committee came off or something.

Not mentioned by Canzano is that a former duck staffer in Chris Peterson also declined a head coaching job when Helfrich was canned.
So there's a couple of people who apparently don't have any loyalty or interest in the U of O program. Don't ever offer them a job again is all i'll say.
And I think Tedford, who just signed with Fresno St also would decline an Oregon offer.

My thought is JW didn't want the pressure of being the next HC of the Ducks. Just the pressure from PK has got to be enormous. T-shirts, media campaigns, homecoming parades? Yea... no thanks. JW, imo, would have been a fail with the expectations of PK and the fan base.

Excellent thought. And who knows, maybe this time the job came not only with expectations, but a few conditions or strings as well - like PK or Mullens having more input or control.
This is 100% speculation, of course. But in light of all the complaints about Mario being stubborn and a micro manager, I wouldn't be surprised.

I agree with this. I'm curious about the letter written by the former players..basically asking Rob to hire Wilcox to "get back to our roots"...seems like maybe that could have played a part in all this.

I listened to Joey and co. discussing the letter on Twitter Spaces. Joey was NOT happy the letter was leaked. He made it clear he sent the letter last week, and was in no way trying to undercut Lanning.
Toward the end Akili Smith went on a rant about not hiring coaches who just use the program and move on. It was pretty heated, and he either left the convo or was cut off. One of them Wondered out loud if Akili were the leak.

Canzano wrote a column about the letter and included it in the column itself.
I could not enlarge the letter to read on my mobile phone in the portrait view but when I turned the phone to landscape view I could read it.
Anyway I am glad they wrote it because I feel the National Championship has become an obsession for some(not me) and the only measure of success.
It is compounded by this illusion, and it is on every comment section I have seen on every Duck platform....all that is needed is great recruiting...even though right before our own eyes, Mario Cristobal showed us that recruiting doesn't win National Championships unto itself.
If it were true then Oregon would be in the Playoffs and not the Alamo Bowl.
