Bo Nix transferring in

https://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/2021/12/former-auburn-quarterback-bo-nix-announces-transfer-to-oregon-ducks.html

I'm not sure why we try to recruit 5 star QBs if we don't develop them and go get wildly inconsistent transfers to take the job.  That's all.

Maybe Ty was too busy reading his high school press clippings to learn the playbook or something.  If he's been doing his job, he ought to be ready to take over and we shouldn't be recruiting this kind of transfer.

I know, when Bo is good he's very, very good but when he's bad, he's bad AB.  I don't see how this gets us closer to a playoff team, or even closer to beating Utah.

This really bums me out. Very disappointed right now. as a grad transfer, he will expect to play, and has probably been given the word he will...this just sucks. I don't know how this will impact Ty and Jay, but what a disappointment right now.

Re: Bo Nix transferring in

I can't believe Bo Nix is transfering here.

He looked really good in the game or 2 I've seen him.

I'm sure he's not coming to the Ducks to be a backup after being a freshman starter and team captain. I sure hope he wasn't promised a starter job.

It just seems really weird that he's transferring at all and coming to the Ducks. Is there something behind the scenes we don't know about Ty Thompson?

Coaches come and go for the Ducks, however utilizing transfer QB's instead of developing talent has become a hallmark of the team.

Re: Bo Nix transferring in

To be fair, not every player is a freshman phenom right out of the box - thought it seems like most of the QBs for other teams are!

That said, the failure to maximize Herbert should’ve been the last straw.

Both Bama and Ohio State went with redshirt kids and did just fine..we get another GT. They'll say it's a competition, but Dillingham was Nix's OC at one time. Ty and Jay may not be ready right now, but I think both are capable. Guess we'll see how this goes: I don't like it.

I don’t like it either, especially after I read this:

Bo Nix's national passer rating his three seasons at Auburn:

2019: 84th
2020: 82nd
2021: 86th

The much-maligned Anthony Brown this season is 64th.

Re: Bo Nix transferring in

Nix was quoted "I think when you look at it from afar the main thing is is to go somewhere that needs a quarterback and can kind of make ends meet to what a great team is going to look like" he continues for a while and adds "With that being said, it's not everywhere - not everywhere needs a quarterback."

I'm sure he thinks the Ducks need a QB and he's it.

Has anyone else wondered about Lanning only hiring coaches he's worked with? Now Bo's former OC Kenny has him coming to the Ducks. Hiring coaches and finding players you're familiar isn't necessarily a bad thing and happens all the time. I just hope this isn't turning into a team or something like a business you've seen in the past with a buddy buddy atmosphere where the promotions are based on who you know, not who's the best for the job.

Hiring coaches you know is fine, imo, but then bringing in your OC's former QB right away is a bad look. Nix is actually very comparable to AB.

Yup, I was thinking about this too - including the business/promotion analogy. Hopefully Lanning ca maintain a balance.

On a lighter note, you seem to have to have the same haircut and beard to get hired as well.

Re: Bo Nix transferring in

In 2019, when Dillingham was his OC, Bo beat Bama 48-45..his stat line was  not impressive. He does throw the ball down the field, so better than Brown that way, but seems to be pretty inconsistent.

  • Bo Nix, QB, Auburn: 15-of-30, 173 yards, one touchdown; six carries, 44 yards, one touchdown

Re: Bo Nix transferring in

Ok, I started this on a negative note but I'll say this.  Bo is obviously talented.  He led his team to a win over Bama as a freshman which sort of made a mess of Bama's season.  He did the same this year to Ole Miss, one of only two losses they had on the year.  He can run the ball, perhaps not as well as AB, but well enough to be a threat.

Unlike AB, he's a threat to throw the ball downfield more than once or twice a game.  So the defense has to defend the whole field.

It's just that when he's bad, he's not good, at all.  Maybe he'll be more consistent next year.

There's two scenarios under which I don't mind this.  1) Our young guys really aren't ready.  I hate that for another reason because I think that means they have been poorly coached, but that's the past.  2) One of our younger guys is looking promising but the other isn't and we need insurance/backup.  I can be happy with it in that scenario, too.

But wouldn't it be cool if we had a 5 star QB come in and be ready to play by mid season or at the latest by his second year?

Re: Bo Nix transferring in

Danny Lanning & Friends otherwise known formerly as the Oregon Ducks...well I am on record as being terribly disappointed with his hiring and Nix coming in only adds to that disappointment. Now Danny Lanning and Friends will be the least experienced trifecta(head coach-OC-DC) in the Pac-12 next season.

For me when you cannot even wait until the spring practices to see what you have with three QB's...you are starting with a flawed approach. TT, JB and RA have been practicing with the current players for 1(TT) and 2(JB, RA) seasons...and now Nix???

But when you hire a kid head coach with no head coaching experience...

Re: Bo Nix transferring in

I don’t like this. Not one bit.

I hope T Thompson stays and beats Nix out for the starting job.
