anybody who holds a current subscription to The Athletic . . .
they just 'renewed' my unwanted scrip w a $72 charge to my checking acct. inquiries to the 'customer support team' result in a boilerplate email saying that no refunds will be given for cancellations. I've had to escalate to the good folks at OnPoint.
content has been spiraling downward for months. haven't seen anything from Tyson Alger about the Ducks, unless it's been somehow removed from my feed. don't want anymore.
(Edit: Tyson left months ago)
if anybody holds a scrip, I recommend you log in and cancel now. you can still gain access to the site for the remainder of your current term. be proactively preemptive, man.
think I'm going to send this along to the Little Bald Man for a Monday Mailbag topic. maybe he finally do some good in the world and broadcast to a larger audience.

Holy cow! I thought it was just me! I canceled this morning too — $72 is too much for the content I was getting from them. I'll see what I can do through Capital One.

I'll check. I cancelled when Tyson left, but I still get it, tho not the premium content.

I thought I had canceled it too, through "Subscriptions" on my iphone 3 months ago. But apparantly, it needs to be done through their website.

The two guys who started The Athletic in 2016 just sold it to the NY Times for $550 million! Good for them. I am guessing the rate hike is due to having access to more content via the NY Times.

I canceled, but it had nothing to do with the rate hike - it was because there was little to no Duck coverage, Bubble Screen, or Faux Pellini. Unfortunately, I waited until the end of the college football season to cancel, figuring I'd get most of my money refunded (my subscription renewed in late November). Big mistake, obviously.
What I really dislike is their refusal to answer questions regarding content. No one I know or saw who asked if we'd be getting a new Ducks beat writer got a straight answer. And when John Walters' Bubble Screen hadn't appeared for a while, I emailed them asking if he were still writing it for The Athletic. Their reply:
"You can search for articles and authors by clicking on the magnifying at the top left of theathletic.com. You can also search for articles, authors, and teams in the Discover tab of The Athletic app. Please let us know if you have any questions in the future."
I was waffling on whether or not I'd cancel, but that ridiculous and insulting reply pretty much sealed the deal.

Thanks so much for giving us a shot. I've cancelled your subscription and refunded your charge. It may take up to 5-10 days for the charge to appear on your statement. Let us know if there is anything we can do to win your business back in the future. Best,Hailey

Tyson Alger is writing for an outfit called I-5 corridor, focused on local sports. scrip is $4.80/mo or $48 for annual. looks like some good stuff on the site. think I'll repurpose my The Athletic refund.
