This headline says it all

“ ‘I didn’t chase anybody out the gym this year’: Dana Altman says work ethic will be emphasized after Oregon underachieved in 2021-22”

Coach Altman did not hold back.

YES! It was behind a subscriber paywall but I read it via a "Dana Altman "Oregon" Google search...

Also Graves had related thoughts regarding the women.

I think the two perceived "leaders"(not to be confused with "best player"), Richardson for the men and Paopao for the women were not that respectively.

This is what Graves had to say...

Re: This headline says it all

A coach can motivate during games and practice, but the really hard work that takes someone to excellence happens when you work on your own, and that has to come from within a person.  Sometimes a coach can help draw it out but the drive has to be there.

And you just can't always tell with high school athletes whether they have it or not.  You can check all the boxes in recruiting but that drive just isn't there sometimes even with those who were high school superstars.  You can be a superstar in high school on talent alone, but you can't construct a great college team on talent alone.  You have to have the drive to win, which means not only the work ethic but also the will to put the team first.

Re: This headline says it all

Most 3*, 4* and 5* players are playing on HS teams as well as on AAU and likewise circuit teams.  Each of these teams serve a different function.  The HS teams are about the school and the team winning games and titles.  AAU teams are about finding and developing elite individual talent, running these kids thru so many pipelines of skills training at the expense of the game itself.  The higher the skill level of the player, the less they can run a pick and roll, set a screen, box out, go backdoor or even complete a bounce pass.  Elite talent heads to Power conference shools, great HS talent heads to the mid-majors.

My viewership of the tourney so far has been limited, but I have caught both Saint Peter's games and they are a fundmentally sound team that can work the ball around and get some very easy looks at the basket.  Their talent is what it is and shows on the defensive side, but they have figured out how to maximize thier possessions and frustrate elite players who are not able to recognize when the pick and roll is coming or when boards come hard because they are gettng boxed out.

All my blah, blah, blah aside, Altman is a high basketball IQ guy who simply had an off year because his players were not high basketball IQ guys.

Re: This headline says it all

Dana said he never had to ask a good player to come to the gym or come to a game in 42 years. Was he directly calling out Will Richardson? I'm sure he was talking about more than just Will Richardson, but it made be wonder if was one of the key players with effort issues.

I'm sure they'll be some transfers going both directions this offseason.

I had hopes for this year. Going into the season ranked 13th and ending with a second round NIT defeat is a bad way to finish.

Re: This headline says it all

In arguably the 2 most important "help the team" categories, assists and defensive rebounding, Oregon was dismal in the Pac-12...9th in assists and 10th in defensive rebounding. Even the beavers who had their worst record in school history were better at assists than Oregon! A lot of players who wanted the ball to shoot but not share it; a lot of guys who apparently expected others to rebound while they ran down the floor.

And if you are the best all around player on the team(Richardson) then leadership responsibilities come with that distinction and if you don't lead with your voice and mannerisms because you are quiet; then find quiet ways to lead like...oh staying extra in the gym as one example.
