Transfer portal impact is growing by the day...it seems

Very good article with a range of thoughts from a variety of coaches.

Apparently in season transfers(so players can enroll by January) are the most disruptive.

Also the suggestion of eliminating Spring Camp may help keep players out of the transfer portal seems worthy of consideration.

The fact is, recruiting in the traditional sense of a singular focus on high school kids is diminishing in importance. Recruiting your own roster to retain players and the transfer portal are more and more pivotal.

And in the "be careful what you ask for" category...good luck hoping the NCAA will do anything...most everyone could hardly wait for the NCAA to "get out of the way" of college sports...well now they are pretty much watching from the sidelines and it is the wild wild west.

College athletics is spiraling out of control.  It's not just football and men's basketball, all non-revenue generating sports are getting hammered.  Complete rosters are being dismantled with regularity and good coaches are being hung out to dry with alarming regularity.  Witness the mass exodus from the Duck women's basketball program this year, you would think that Graves was the new Runge.  His sin?  Calling out his team for underperforming to the level of their talent and ability.

The NCAA is the obvious body to get their arms around this, but anymore they act as more of an activist entity than a governing body, trying to make everyone happy as opposed to enacting sensible legislation that may not resonate as "popular" to certain factions.  And players?  Some just love to be pursued so their social media postings are must reading to a certain crowd.

My solution?  A three year commitment from all scholarship (full and partial) players to a program before a one-time transfer is allowed.  All sports, including men's basketball and other sports where early exit to the pro level exists.  If a player decides to opt out of their commitment, they are still bound by the three year contract as signed and agreed to by the player and a co-signer before they can go pro or play on a different team.  I agree that there does need to be defined windows for speicifc activity (transfers, signing periods, etc.) that correspond to the the seasons of each respective sport.

Exception?  If a coaching change occurs in a player's three year contract, they can exercise their transfer option earlier, but it is still a one-time transfer.

The goal???  Keeping these damn kids in one school and honoring the university that is providing the academic opportunity.  Commitment and Consistency to put the immature wandering eyes at bay for at least their freshman and sophomore seasons so they can at least settle in- not everyone is cut out for college at the academic or athletic levels.  In my opinion, the entire framework of this part of the puzzle must be fixed and in place before you take on NIL.  In fact, fixing the structure of NCAA athletics in all sports may yield corrections in the NIL conversation...

My bad for getting a tad bitchy here, but when I see an organization of which I consume/participate/rely on so far off their mission with no obvious activity to right the ship it stings...

You make an interesting point about players signing a contract i.e. if you want to have opportunities like NIL, full scholarship, etc. then we will treat you like a "professional" and have you sign a contract.

All contracts have cancellation clauses but it seems right now the players have all the leverage any way you look at it. They can come to a college, maybe get an NIL, full scholarship and all related benefits...then suddenly walk away(transfer portal).

At least coaches have buyout clauses as a consequence for leaving early.
