Spring Game

Decided to DVR and take it in.  I admit that I came away impresesed at seeing what these athletes could do in space when given the opportunity.  I also admit that the Ducks seemed to benefit from the portal in Nix and Whittingham, at least to the degree that they seemed to be solid players, albeit against a defense playing at 3/4 speed.

I really like what I saw with Butterfield.  Guy is a gunslinger.  Will be interesting to see how the backup QB situation shakes out in Fall camp...

I really thought Butters came out a little bit ahead of Ty. Nix was obviously the #1 imo, but both backups had their moments. I loved seeing us up under center..could the power I be far behind, with Noah as the fullback
I think the offense will be fun again.

Re: Spring Game

What a great day for the Spring Game. It was nice to see the Alums there and being brought in to coach.

It was nice to see the offenfense playing aggressive. Of course like JJ said this was against a slow defense. Kind of like an All Star / Pro Bowl game.

It was a little concerning seeing Ty miss bad on some short throws. Bo looked pretty good, except that one pick he threw looked awful. It would be a shame to see Jay listed 3rd string and transfer. I guess we'll see. At this point I'll be shocked if Bo doesn't start the first game. Which would probably be best for Georgia, but I'm not sure if this is the best QB for the rest of the season or if it causes transfers.

Whittington looked really fast with breakaway speed.

I already forgot his name, but the rookie punter from Illinois looks great. What's going on with Snee right now? Can the rookie kick field goals too? It seems like you need at least one backup that can kick a field goal.

With the way the games played and injuries it was hard to tell how good the defense and pass rush will be.

Overall it was a good production for the Ducks.

Re: Spring Game

Nix will start week one barring injury.  Think the evidence is there in spades.

I am looking forward to a homegrown QB again.  After Mariota, the Ducks went with Adams, Prukop, Herbert (homegrown), Shough (Homegrown), Brown to Nix.  2/3 of our QB starters are from the outside.  Coaxhing staff IMO really needs to lock on to either Jay or Ty now and develop the hell out of them before Fall camp opens.  Need a very strong backup, which is also something the Ducks have not had since maybe Leaf or Fife or even Feeley...?

Agree 1000%! Oregon had a rich history of good to great QB's until Mark Helfraud, post-Mariota, could neither recruit or coach up the QB's who came into the program.

The fact Oregon will have its 4th different starting QB in as many seasons proves the point.

Bringing in Adams and Prukop set a horrible precedent that Oregon was unwilling to DEVELOP QB's and instead would look for quick fix solutions, even from lower Divisions.

Yet teams like Alabama, Clemson, the luckeyes, Oklahoma, etc. can find ways to start and win with freshmen QB's...but mighty Oregon including its newest head coach can only cry for help outside.

And if the argument is, "What about Herbert?" EXACTLY...proves the point. Helfraud had little choice but to put him as a starter as a true freshman in what turned out to be the worst season in 25-years for Oregon football. And despite playing for 3 head coaches and as many OC's, Herbert had great success by his senior year.

Yet 4* / 5* recruits... Thompson, Butterfield and the now departed Ashford need to be "rescued" AGAIN with Nix following Brown. But Jonathan Smith with half the talent as Oregon can develop multiple QB's who were one win from playing for the Pac-12 Championship last season and beat a Utah team which overwhelmed Oregon twice.
