Regardless of why this is happening it is a MAJOR move and the Pac-12 has to respond in kind either collectively or each school individually.
Losing USC and UCLA but adding Nevada, Fresno State, etc. is not responding in kind. It is a "loss."
If the Pac-12 fails to handle this subtraction with its own MAJOR move, then eventually Oregon will be a mid major non-conference game on Big Ten and SEC schedules.
True, I don't see how the Ducks can try to stay big with playoff aspirations.
It's the Bad News Bears/ Mighty Ducks Disney movie fantasy for trying to win a championship. DL leaves and the Ducks find a former washed up player to take the helm. He recruits a local group of misfits that are horrible from the get go. With lots of practice and tire jumping drills they get good enough for a playoff run! I think I could write the whole movie script tonight.

USC administration just tweeted they will be joining the Big 10 in 2024.
Will the Ducks play USC again? They’re not on the schedule this year.
USC has just taken over the Fuskies as my most despised team.

Wilner is saying joining the Big 10 will more than double the LA schools money from media rights. UCLA is in big debt right now.

The University presidents kept Larry Scott around for years and let him run this conference into the ground on TV rights. The PAC appears to be dead, but I'm not sure the presidents know it yet. This is just sad as far as I'm concerned, but Oregon was caught a little flat footed here it seems, and Mullens needs to make some quick decisions. I'd prefer the SEC, but the B1G is certainly another option.

A decade or so ago they were talking about super conferences. It was inevitable that this sort of thing was going to happen. Consolidation will change the dynamic in certain geographic areas. Now as we are transitioning out of the pandemic era, which is really a Shift in Consciousness going on at present... it appears that the college sports era morphing into something else will be a very real process. I only hope that Oregon will find it's niche within this new paradigm. But as I have mentioned in other forums....we are in a new era where everything is changing. The old systems are dying out right now. Eventually pure amateurism will be back in vogue. At the expense of the professional and big time college format of course.

Anyone think a B12 / PAC merger could be on the cards? The geography works reasonably. The football champion should generally be a lock to make the playoffs. With Oregon, Utah, Baylor, Ok St, etc, you've got some real legit teams, anyone who comes through as champion with only one loss should be in. Basketball would have all the B12 powers plus AZ and UO.

It seems like this would be GK's best play at this point. Oregon and Washington would have to stay to make it more relevant. B12 might just be hoping to cherry pick the best of the Pac though.
Putting that aside my big question is does either the Big 10 or SEC want Oregon? I'm guessing PK and company would rather join one of them instead of waiting out a potential merger like this. Wilner thought that Oregon and Washington are the only schools the Big 10 would consider, but wasn't even sure if they're interested in either.

I'd prefer the B10 for the only reason of playing the schools that just left and the Fuskies if they join. Earlier I mentioned the geography issue without thinking that the B10 has Rutgers and Maryland making for cross country trips regardless.
It truly is a sad day no matter what happens. I guess everything always changes and the wheels have been in motion for something like this, but I'll sure miss having the Pac riveralies as we know it.

The eyeball test suggests to me that Oregon could win the Pac-10 / Big 12 merged into one.
The Big Ten? Nope. Not happening. For the record, I don't think USC and UCLA will do well in the Big Ten either...ditto for Texas and Oklahoma in the SEC.
I like the "L" shape of west coast into the southwest of the Pac-10/Big 12 Conferences. Makes sense geographically.
This was a pure money grab by USC and UCLA...the question is will other Pac-12 teams go rogue too or act as a unit?
Remember too the Big 12 has already agreed to add BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston ahead of the 2023-24 year.

so the Ducks would have a game every year v SC, UCLA, UW, and Tree.
on a two-year, home-away cycle, play five games against another division pod (like the NFL).
fill in the other three spots with Nevada, Fresno, OS, Wazzu, E. Wash, . . . (stay regional).
four division winners in SEC and B1G in quarterfinals. those winners in the semis for SEC and B1G champs, who meet in the NC. or maybe some cross-conference seeding to mix it up.
I wouldn't cry. cost of my season-tics would prob more than double, but I still wouldn't cry.

Reports floating around of the Ducks and UW applying to the B1G.

Some updates from Wilner. He's hearing the door is closed for the meantime for the Ducks joining the Big 10. Supposedly their next target is Notre Dame, which could take a lengthy amount of time. If Notre Dame joins then it's possible the Ducks could be added for the sake of evening numbers.
The recruiting front could be in major trouble if the Ducks stay in what's left of the Pac.
I like that Wilner has sources and knows the conference well. I've seen a number of national writers act like the Ducks joining the Big 10 is a given with nothing more than speculation.
