Is Oregon a CREATOR or JOINER?

With reports that Arizona, ASU, Colorado and Utah are meeting with the B12...a move I could understand on their part...the options for Oregon and "related" schools seems to be dwindling.

If Oregon wants to be a CREATOR...it seems the best option is to hunker down with WSU, uw, OSU, Cal and Stanford and most likely at this point either poach teams from or merge with the Mountain West...I probably could live with that scenario.

Otherwise it appears Oregon will be a JOINER as in the B10 or B12.

For me the B12 would be more tolerable in part because I believe it would be more winnable...in football.

I have no desire to see Oregon join the B10 for many reasons and all the money in the world will not make Oregon an elite B10 program.

There is one person I have empathy for... George Kliavkoff. I don't know if he got played; set-up, lied to big time, was asleep at the wheel, etc or all of the above and more...but I feel he was working hard to undo the damage of Larry Scott and those efforts are largely irrelevant now.

I do agree with you about GK: I think he was blind-sided by all this. Scott carries most of the blame, but we shouldn't let the University presidents who enabled him off the hook. As for the scenarios out there, if we don't mind going back to the late Brooks/early Belotti years, than going with the MWC option is fine, but no more chasing that "natty"...which I might be fine with, but not the majority of the fan base. It all comes down to what you want for Oregon FB moving forward, and of course all of it is out of our hands.

Re: Is Oregon a CREATOR or JOINER?

GK was punked by the LA schools.  Very shortsighted on their part to sell out without a negotiation.  As almost eveyone has stated, they are not likely going to compete for titles in the B1G, just cash checks.

My thinking is that Oregon stands pat today with the P12 and gives GK some time to gather his ground and see what other moves happen elsewhere as ESPN/FOX are not yet done with swizzling around other teams to add as well as plotting teams to jettison.  Add to this the NIL stuff seemingly going to morph into paying players as employees and at that point there is going to be a new line of delineation between the haves and have-nots.  Oregon, for all its success with major booster support, cannot hang their hat on this support forever and will have a point of reckoning.  Better to reckon with this in the P12 than in the B1G.

Re: Is Oregon a CREATOR or JOINER?

I totally understand the sentiment about joining the B1G. Things just wouldn't be the name playing teams out east.

I'll push back a little about not being able to be competitive. The Ducks did just beat the Buckeyes on the road and win the Rose Bowl over MSU and managed to do it with MC's archaetic offensive. It's wasn't all that long ago we were in the playoffs and Championship game either. Sure, it might not be easy, but something like a 8-4 season in the B1G seems manageable. They have some bottom dwellers too.

UCLA might be toast in the B1G. I think USC has a chance since this isn't Clay Helton's team anymore. With one of the best offensive coaches in LC and what looks to be top 5 recruiting again they could very well have success.

Staying in the Pac may seem like an easy way to success in regards to being able to win your conference. The thing is this won't be the same Ducks team anymore. I'm looking forward to watching some of the best LB's. in the nation on the Ducks in addition to great wideouts and other players at various positions. Dan Lanning and the most talented players could be out the door real soon. We could have to try to figure out how to try to build a team like JS is doing with the Beavs. Maybe PK throws a lot at NIL and the drop off isn't extreme, but who knows.

The only thing I know for sure is that I would've liked to keep the Pac we have now in tact and Larry deserves most of the blame.

Re: Is Oregon a CREATOR or JOINER?

some other random thoughts, as we all wait (and we might be waiting a year or more before it all shakes out).

case for the B1G
have had season-tics at Autzen 30+ years. thinking about the Brasky game in 2017, Taggart's year. early Sept, school not in, so two sections normally reserved for students uncommitted. UO AD sold out the stadium at an avg price bout $120 per tic. place was full of red; lots of really nice folks who traveled. beautiful sunny day, nat'l TV, good game. (Ducks went 7-6 that year; Brasky 4-8; hardly major attractions.)
similar atmosphere for Michigan in 2003 (year after Autzen expansion), Sparty in 2014. these types of games are great for the fans, even if you choose to sell your tics for 2x markup. gotta think the players and recruits love 'em as well. even the 'second-tier' B1G schools like Purdue or Illini bring fans, great bands, and TV eyes. all of this makes the cash registers sing.
you just can't get any of that playing Utah St in a reconstituted Pac-whatever.

sparky
ASU is a big player here; haven't read much about them. gigantic university (over 70k, I think) w mucho alums. good teams across most sports, major TV market, reliable fan base and donors. makes a lot of sense for ASU and UofA to join B12, recruit Texas and play in Texas. not so sure that path works for the mountain schools. will be interesting to see what's decided in Tempe next few weeks.
