Wilner on IF the Pac-12 expands

In this context, "expand" means adding non-P5 schools vs poaching teams from the B12.

Ugh...not appealing to me at all.

Yet as Wilner notes, "But when you aren't operating from a position of strength, standards must change."

I did find his angle of perhaps adding some basketball only schools to be an interesting option i.e. Gonzaga.

Overall though this just doesn't look good... important to note as Wilner stresses...these are not what he is advocating per se but rather IF this is the direction the Pac-12 wants to go here are the most reasonable options.

Re: Wilner on IF the Pac-12 expands

This is a good time to bring up the question of is basketball the future?

I ask this since participation in youth football is significantly down and especially on the West Coast.

This is going to translate into diminished talent entering football.

Personally, I enjoy the game of football more and football ratings are doing really well compared to a number of sports. With the participation levels and interest from a young audience declining the future of college sports could shift from being dominated by football.

Adding basketball schools could be the long play.

Just some food for thought.

This opens up an entirely different can of worms, and wisely so.  IMO the sports that will survive and thrive are the ones that:

*. Kids can organize easily on their own with their buddies
*. Parents will spend his awful amounts of cash on to support

Basketball and soccer check the first box, soccer and baseball check the second from just what I have observed over the course of raising a couple munchkins.

In terms of this related to the future of the sport or in terms of the business of the sport, I think that most football businesspeople care not about anything down the road, not a lot of visionaries leading any sort of charge, rather folks cashing checks today while the getting is good.

Personally, basketball is my favorite sport, but the game is considerably unwatchable at the pro level and the college game is getting worse.  That leaves baseball for me, and the only way I can truly enjoy a game is in person….

Still only in my early 50’s, should I be this cranky about sports yet????😳
