Pac-12 / ACC Merger...which option do you like?

Well composed article that filters out all the emotional stuff and looks at options.

Personally I like #5 with 4 six team Divisions PLUS it puts Oregon, OSU, uw, WSU, Cal and Stanford all in the same Division and keeps those rivalries alive and if anything intensifies them.

Otherwise 24 teams spanning across the USA helps recruiting and media coverage...plus 2 semifinal games with the 4 Divisions leading to a Championship Game in football. As well having Duke and UNC in the same conference as Oregon in basketball would be nice.

All that and more without sacrificing the culture of each conference per se.

If we(Pac-12) are trying to go big time...might as well swing for the fences with a full blown Pac-12 / ACC merger 🙏

Regardless as this article suggests...there appears to be more options for Oregon(and the Pac-12) merging with the ACC than anything with the B10 or B12.

Merging with the ACC seems like the next best option from a financial perspective if the B1G & SEC are not options.

I like option 4 and would be fine with a number of those combinations.

I guess ESPN can remake the current ACC deal? I thought the original talk was a loose partnership because of this.

My understanding is the ACC as is cannot remake the current deal if it is only the same schools who agreed to the deal originallyi.e.buyer remorse.

However, by adding the Pac-12 then it is not the same conference per se so a restructuring is possible.

For me, I just don't believe Oregon trying to do its own thing or even in conjunction with the uw(how ironic would that be with Oregon partnering with the huskies?) will work in the long run.

I am hoping for a merger vs cherry picking a few schools here and there.

What I have found and heard of on sports talk radio is the B10 would take Stanford in a heartbeat with their academics, money, etc. whereas not all of the B10 sees the value of adding Oregon.

Fans tend to think it is mostly about football and brand recognition but it is much bigger than that...Stanford is in the Bay Area...Oregon in Eugene. Big difference.

Re: Pac-12 / ACC Merger...which option do you like?

P12 and ACC merging creates a third mega conference where the networks only want two.  This is becoming the NFL-AFL rivalry of the 60's, but now becoming the ESPN league vs the FOX league.  TBH, it is just so weird to watch the fabric of college football and its regional enthusiasm get sold out from underneath the locals who have lived and breathed generations of the culture created by this sport and its rivalries and traditions so as to make a fast buck by placing the importance of TV over the actual live event in the stands.  This has been a debate raging for the better part of the last decade and will only become louder as fans in the stands are secondary to the potential of tv ratings.  Trrrblll...

I don't think that is the case at all. The networks want MONEY and IF they can be presented with an option to make more money they will do it without hesitation.

As is noted in the article...

"SI.com reports the Pac-12 and ACC are working on a broadcasting partnership with ESPN."

If we have learned anything these past few weeks it is all about MONEY...not the number of mega conferences, teams in those conferences, etc.

One thing I have learned through the years with sports is purists eventually get left behind and slide into irrelevancy.

Remember when the Designated Hitter was going to "ruin" baseball and rackets changing from wood to other materials would "destroy the great traditions of tennis" and so on...most every sport has defining moments in which the doom and gloom predictions of purists never happened.

The reality is, for someone my age, I am not the primary target audience for just about anything other than Medicare plans and reverse mortgages 😂

College football doesn't care about my years and years of following the sport any more than the tennis industry cares that I learned the sport using a wood racket.

Re: Pac-12 / ACC Merger...which option do you like?

I'm hearing more and more that the PAC just might decide to do nothing right now...especially Oregon. All this realignment won't take place for 2 years, and making a hasty decision to join either the ACC or the Big12 might hamper efforts to eventually join the B1G. To me waiting makes sense, but we'll see how it goes.

JC's article referenced a 30 day negotiating window with the Pac right now and that's why there might be a lull.

The ACC merger sounds unlikely from his take, but who knows. A lot of speculation right now and we'll just have to wait.

Re: Pac-12 / ACC Merger...which option do you like?

What I don't think the Pac-12(10) can do now is nothing per se...I believe something(s) are indeed going on.

I am assuming the remaining 10 schools are wanting to stay together for the time being BUT Kliavkoff and his bosses need to explore options, which I believe is happening.

As USC and UCLA demonstrated, loyalty to the Conference is non-existent.

Personally I would like to see Oregon as part of a MERGER with the other 10 schools vs doing their thing and simply being a pawn to a plan in which they are an add-on(joining the B10).

It is important to remember, I think, that USC and UCLA will still be in the Pac-12 for 2 more years.

What about the walk-in tubs? Maybe create some crossover appeal with the players taking ice baths advertising trope and replace Pat Boone with Joe Namath 😉
