I am hoping by "preliminary" it means like decades away🙏 I have zero interest in being buried in the Big Ten. Discussions never hurt...just hoping this doesn't become a reality.
The problem is you can mix and match any teams but the CULTURE is the challenge (which I believe USC and UCLA will discover is not to their liking i.e. playing in the snow at Rutgers). Nebraska had a great football tradition in the CULTURE of the Big 12...and now?
The cultures of the Pac-12 and Big Ten have more differences than what they have in common and simply adding teams doesn't change that reality.

Would not surprise me a bit if UW and Stanford also sent scouting parties out in this fashion to the B1G. The conference is going to want 20 high profile programs with TV market share for their partnership with Fox. My guess is that first passes on the size of the TV cut was tossed out there as well as discussing how the divisions in the conference might stack out. Hate that fans and traditions and regional rivalries are taking a backseat to TV cash.

the author w all the 'sources' who started the ripple, Mr McMurphy (not R.P), also has Mario Cristobal's Canes in the Final Four w Bama, UGa, and tOSU. Beavs to the Holiday Bowl and Ducks v Tenn in Las Vegas Bowl.
he can't spell 'Schill' either.
but I have no doubt this is true. if for no other reason, it makes sense to have more Left Coast teams to fill the early- and late-evening time slots.

Like many, I'm stunned by these developements. It seems tho as if the Ducks do need to be in one of the "Super "conferences to stay relevant in FB. Sad that the networks couldn't care less about rivalries and tradition:money is all that matters to them. I doubt the PAC can stay together past 2024 unless something major happens

I must be in the minority. The sooner we escape beavis, WSU, AZ, and Utah the better me thinks.
Oregon is not big enough to support 2 major football teams. It never has been.. With 1 team we can be like Nebraska used to be. I want that. Have fun in Albuquerque beavis.

Reading this made my head hurt..it's a breakdown from 538 sports about how the B1G might expand and which schools are a good fit.

@ORG
Nate gonna Nate, and that's a deeper dive than usual. it affirms the folklore that most of us just assume: UO is a good B1G fit in many ways (secular, state flagship, AAU-member, winning sports teams) and punches above its weight in other categories (smaller TV market but national brand, improving academics).
college football is evolving to a closed system: the 20+-team B1G and SEC filling all the 'playoff' spots toward a national championship. Ducks could go 13-0 in a reconstituted Pac-NN/Big12/ACC and get to play W. Virginia in the Cotton Bowl. whoopee.
I think there's a strong case for Cal & Tree as well, although neither school rated highly when all the nums were crunched. adding more Left Coast schools (esp traditional intrastate rivals) creates content to fill those evening TV slots for people watching in sports bars in NYC, Philly, and Chicago.
the 24-team B1G scenario described at the end, w UO, UW, Cal, Tree, SC, and BruCru in a six-team 'Pacific division', is a realistic possibility. if this all shakes out that way two years from now, it would be fine w me.

Having a number of Pac teams join could make it a little more palatable for me. Especially if a West division was created and they play each other more often. I thought there was talk of this with the current expansion to ease the travel burden.
It still seems that viewership is a valuable asset and the Ducks have it. The Ducks had more viewers last season than USC & UCLA combined. As the article stated who's talking and watching Rutgers just because they're in a big market?
I've been trying to tune out expansion with actual games approaching and limited information available. It's hard to ignore it when the Ducks are in talks and all.
I wonder if ESPN or anyone else who would make a media deal is waiting to see what the B1G is going to do with more additions. At this point it's hard to see the Pac surviving with any more departures.

The proposed four divisions of six teams each in an expanded B1G would at least help many folks West of the Rockies digest this stuff. In terms of timing, this has to shake out very soon as I cannot fathom a scenario where USC/UCLA leave one year, UO/UW, etc. leave the next and so on. If teams are leaving, they need to leave in one group at the same time, and if the Four Corners go to the B12 at the same time...
My best guess is that the P12 folds in two years. With zero flagships left, I see OSU and WSU joining a reconstituted MWC...

Oregon...
+small stadium
+small state
+small media market
+minimal recruiting opportunities
USC and UCLA(Stanford too)...opposite of Oregon.
The BIG would not be interested in having Oregon because they need more competition in the BIG or better balance...but rather so they can pimp the Oregon brand for more dollars.
Yes it appears to be all about the money because it certainly isn't about the fan or alumni experience...every current BIG team is at least 2 time zones away; half the football season is played outdoors in cold weather...it may not even be about the athlete experience either...the travel for basketball teams will be brutal in the dead of winter no less.
Yeah maybe Oregon(20-28 all time against the BIG in football in regular season and bowl games) won't have to play WSU, osu, etc...but as an alum of Oregon and fan for decades, I have minimal interest in "starting over" to watch rivalries build against Rutgers, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana and others...we will not be playing the luckeyes every season or Michigan or Penn State.
Otherwise I am waiting for and hoping Commissioner Kliavkoff will deliver some good news that keeps the Pac-10 remaining teams together with perhaps an "arrangement" with another P5 Conference...in a media deal beneficial to all.
