Rebooting

Notes after some time to digest yesterday:

*. Looked like the incoming transfers all played significantly vs original signees at their respective positions.  Lotta buddy deals made by the new coaches but not looking like they will pay very big.
*. Lanning lacks a red ass gene.  Not that the camera spent much time on him, but each time we did see him he looked like Ted Stryker landing an airplane.  For a defensive specialist to have that unit play so poorly you would have thought he would have had some sort of “come to Jesus” moment after the third score and the game getting out of hand.
*. Nix is a FBS QB, but not special.  His body language was terrible out there, my guess is he is not much liked in the locker room.

It had to be a LONG flight back from ATL.  My hope is that jobs are on the line on the field and coaches are on notice that only the best and motivated will see field.  I thought before yesterday that 8 wins was a reasonable over/under and right about now that might be about right.

Re: Rebooting

I just saw the article on O-live that said Kirby Smart says it's not Dan Lanning and that he knows his players are way better. This was really my biggest takeaway watching the game in that it didn't look like the Ducks had a single position group that was as fast or strong. The experienced and very large O-line was getting pushed around.

The missed tackles on defense is real concerning. The same with not being able to get pressure. Although Georgia has allowed exceptionally few sacks as of recent.

For all the talk about Bo's athleticism it seems going forward he's not athletic enough to make up for bad decision making and picks. He threw a stupid pick in the spring game even.

It's concerning going forward that Bo might have been promised the job. Even though I wanted to see Ty in the first half I get why you leave the starter in to redeem themselves and build confidence. It was late in the game with Georgia taking out their starters is what bothered me. Mario was like this too so it's hard to say that Bo was promised to be the starter, but whatever the reason it's concerning. If I was Ty I might be thinking about leaving about right now.

It's hard to find anything that looked positive. A few of the early offensive drives when the rhythm got going didn't look that bad including the play calling. I wasn't too thrilled with trying to pass the first 2 downs when they were goalline in the first half.

It's hard to say what they'll look like next week except that it can't be any worse.

Re: Rebooting

Excellent points...your use of "rebooting" is an understatement.

Bill Oram of OLive summed it up perfectly with his headline:

"Defeated Oregon Ducks leave Atlanta with more questions than we would have ever expected"

Look, Oregon played the defending National Champions on their "home turf"...I get it...but Lanning is supposed to be this great "defensive guy"  and this is what Oregon's defense allowed even with hyped elite players like Sewell and Flowe...

+Georgia scored touchdowns on each of its first seven possessions

+Converted its first nine third-down plays

+Went 6-for-6 in the red zone

+Georgia didn't punt until early in the fourth quarter

Why? Oregon's tackling was non existent among other issues.

On the flip side... let's be clear, Nix is NOT an athlete. He makes Anthony Brown look like Marcus Mariota, De'Anthony Thomas and Royce Freeman combined.

And Lanning's decision not to try another QB once the Ducks fell behind by 4 possessions or more is reprehensible.

I am fully aware of all the feel good phrases(It is only one game, etc) but even the most skeptical Duck fans of Lanning being hired in the first place, recruiting and so on...LIKE ME😂 expected a much better EFFORT.

Re: Rebooting

Coach Bellotti always said the most important week of the season is after Game 1 and before Game 2.

yesterday reminded me of the [collection of individuals] Oregon put on the field during the pandemic-beset 2020 season: distracted, unfocused, and bearing personal agendas (for understandable reasons at the time). that squad suffered inexcusable losses to Cal and OS, barely escaped a mediocre UCLA team. decided to play real football for one week v SC in the Coliseum on ESPN-national in front of family and friends, and then went back to sleep.

2020 season ended with a 34-17 loss in a NYD bowl to a so-so Iowa St team, led by a . . . (wait for it) . . . three-year starter QB who made all the right reads and distributed the ball to whomever was open. Stetson Bennett is a marginal NFL prospect, but he sliced & diced the UO D yesterday. there is no substitute for continuity, familiarity, and cohesion (Cyclones played 11 games before the bowl that year, Ducks 6).

twenty-one transfers, and a nucleus of house players who are still younger-than-median, inexperienced, or have missed playing(development) time due to injuries. real lack of cohesion across the board, from blown assignments to difficulties lining up in correct formation. right now this is not Lanning's team, or Mario's, or even Taggart's. it's not a team. so it's up to Lanning & staff, and whatever upper-class leadership can be found in the locker room, to make it a team.

we'll be at our tailgate spot near the Serba Sat afternoon. all 14 tics in our group are spoken for. time to get to work. the shape of the road is the road. there is not some other road that wears the shape but only the one. and every voyage begun upon it will be completed. whether horses are found or not. Go Ducks.

Glad you mentioned this, because I noticed it as well. More specifically, there were a couple of times after a false start when he appeared angry, half-throwing half-spiking the ball after the whistle was blown. To be fair, I know nothing of his personality and habits, but still.
