Transfer Portal has damaged Stanford big time

The most glaring statistic I saw last night was...

Oregon - 21 transfers in

Stanford - 1 transfer in

David Shaw was already coaching with one arm tied behind his back re academic requirements to get into Stanford but he still had solid teams.

But now with the Transfer Portal, I am afraid he is doomed. He simply cannot make quick fixes.

Shaw is a very good football coach...he suddenly didn't become an idiot. But the transfer rules which like 99% of the other schools get to take advantage of, he doesn't.

Simple comparison...how good would Oregon be right now without transfers?

Re: Transfer Portal has damaged Stanford big time

Glad you brought this up.  Was thinking the same thing watching their pedestrian QB and line get manhandled by the Duck D.  Then look at Kansas.  Transfers and NIL can build a program in a single year under very good coaching.  It’s eerie to witness the basketballzation of football at this level now that you can go one and done and find the next best opportunity….  Shaw is a great coach and Stanford never gave up.  They were just so very obviously overmatched.  Hopefully their administration understands this when evaluating his performance…

I'm not sure how much several of our University presidents actually value football anymore. They let Scott run the conference into the ground. I think Shaw should move on; he's a good coach but I'm not sure he'll be able to get the kids he needs anymore.

Re: Transfer Portal has damaged Stanford big time

Stanford is a desirable member for any conference...in a major media market, LOTS of money and a great educational institution.

Plus they are competitive overall athletically...how many years have they won the Directors Cup? More NCAA Championships than any other school and in 20 different sports!

FYI Oregon is in Top 20 for total number of NCAA Championships.

I am certainly not in any position to tell David Shaw what he needs to do but I would suggest an "Air Raid" offense...the current pro style offense is too sluggish and slow. If he doesn't know how to implement it he should hire someone who does. The offense needs some sizzle and excitement.

Unless it is to be on the coaching staff for the SF 49ers, I just can't see him leaving his alma mater(or Stanford firing him).

His wife Kori, undergraduate degree at MIT and Masters at Cal Berkeley, is well entrenched in the community...and if you have not read the heart wrenching story about Shaw trying to save his brother's life...

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/30256985/truly-blood-brothers-stanford-coach-david-shaw-recent-fight-save-brother-eric

His situation just doesn't fit the normal narrative for many head coaches of it being time to simply pack the bags and move on.

Re: Transfer Portal has damaged Stanford big time

Good point and stats. I was thinking that the declining participation rate of youth football could be hurting Stanford too.

I don't ever remember their lines looking so weak and lacking power. It's been a while since they've had an electric player on offense like Christian McCaffrey too.

As DR said if they can't find the players for Shaw's style they might need to bring in an OC for an aggressive offense.

I doubt Stanford is playing the NIL game that much, and between that and having such high academic standards, the portal isn't going to help them. College football is undergoing drastic changes. Some teams will adapt and some will get left behind. It's all about money now, and only going to get worse. The PAC looks to be getting left behind. This isn't a horrible thing for those who don't care about competing for the playoffs: it'll be like the 80s, where we never worried about the "natty", and just enjoyed the games.
