Amazon as part of a Pac-12 media rights deal?!?

Re: Amazon as part of a Pac-12 media rights deal?!?

I've seen some of Amazon's Thursday NIght Football and the production is pretty good. They would certainly reach across the county and so many younger people are cord cutters anyway.

Personally I only have Prime when they give me free trails and I try to limit what on buy on there. Getting Prime would be a lot cheaper than signing up for a streaming service like Fubo, which I'm doing now to watch the Ducks. I still rather not utilize Amazon more than necessary and can't say I love the idea.

Wilner makes the case for Amazon having interest and they appear to be out of options. What he didn't discuss is wouldn't Amazon's interest be tied to likes of the Ducks and Huskies in particular being locked in for a while? If not, I can't imagine they're going to be interested in a Mountain West type merger.

Wilner seems to have a strong opinion on the Pac staying together. Just like a lot of fans do too. It seems like it might be affecting his coverage a little bit though in the sense of staying away from what so many others in the business think that the Pac will be done as we know it very soon.

Re: Amazon as part of a Pac-12 media rights deal?!?

The underlying theme here is that the conference will move forward with the remaining ten members.  And logically, why wouldn't they?  And if so, this puts them in a good position to do the next round of poaching instead of being poached.  And with a party like Amazon in the mix, the reach is enormous if it comes about.  Standing pat as they are right now is good, because...

I truly believe that the fanbases of Texas and Oklahoma are going to become very frustrated as their brands get watered down in the SEC and I suspect that UCLA/USC fanbases will feel the same as they possibly morph into middle-of-the-road swimmers in a larger pool.  The money will be nice at the administrative level, but fans like winners, and as we have seen at the Rose Bowl this year, even a winning program does not translate into butts in seats.  Hundred year old stadiums half filled at best on Saturdays in LA might not be the best look on TV...  And this is all about TV, not the in-stadium experience...

Kliavkov has no choice but to play the long game at this point and so far by putting nothing out there officially, he can remain relatively underground while fan ire continues to burn towards the LA schools...

Rambling over...

Good points.

I've really enjoyed watching the Pac this season.

USC might be able to be competitive, but it's hard to see them doing better than a 3rd place finish in the B1G in the next few years. Playing in a Pac title game would seemingly be a lot more enjoyable for fans.

Re: Amazon as part of a Pac-12 media rights deal?!?

If we assume lessons were learned from Larry Scott's tenure... Kliavkoff is working at the direction of the Pac-12 administrators who are his bosses.

I have read on other message boards some comments which seem to suggest Kliavkoff does his own thing or needs to act as such.

Obviously his bosses are trusting him to negotiate on behalf of the Pac-12 but nothing happens without their final approval.
