What is Cristobol Worth?

After the great season and Rose Bowl win I expect the Ducks will sweeten MC's contract as a way to lock him in here.  Mario is currently the 8th highest paid coach in the PAC-12 at $2.6 million per year.  As a comparison, both Leach and Whittingham will make $4.0 million next year.  Shaw is hauling in $4.6 million at Stanford.  Chip is making $3.5 million and doing miserably at UCLA.  Helton makes $3.2 million and is lucky to be employed.  $2.6 million for Mario clearly does not cut it.

So what is fair for Mario?  Seems to me that $3.5 million would be the base.

Re: What is Cristobol Worth?

I'm right with you at $3.5. That seems pretty reasonable. He's certainly due for a raise after this season.

Re: What is Cristobol Worth?

What to pay Cristobal may be neutralized by what he has to pay his assistants, especially an OC.  Reserving more for the assistants may be more important.

Compared with the other Pac-12 coaches . . . yes, Cristobal should get more.  Let's see what Oregon is going to have to come with for an OC.

Re: What is Cristobol Worth?

Agree that the pay for assistants is also critical.  But if the Ducks want to be an elite football school (and I am convinced that they do) then elite level pay for the head coach is needed.   If only we had a rich uncle who could help..........

What does his package look like after incentives and bonuses. Also, I don’t think compensation is the highest thing on his list, and let’s face it that money goes way further in Eugene than in LA or SF or Seattle. That said, obviously we should pay whatever it takes.

Eventually Oregon's going to have to pay more. If they want to compete with the Clemsons, the Bamas, the Ohio States (little the), they're going to have to pay their coaches. Here are a few of the top current salaries in the NCAA...

Dabo Swinney — $9,315,600
Nick Saban — $8,857,000
Jim Harbaugh — $7,504,000
Jimbo Fisher — $7,500,000
Kirby Smart — $6,871,600
Gus Malzahn — $6,827,589
Tom Herman — $6,750,000
Jeff Brohm — $6,600,000

I'm not saying that time is right now. But Cristobal just took a huge step forward in his marketability.

Re: What is Cristobol Worth?

Don't repeat the Helfrich mistake.  He just cashed some nice bonuses / incentives.

Bump his base salary up to $3 million, maybe, out of respect for what he's accomplished, but give him money to play with for assistants.

Saban, Swinney, and Malzahn have built up their salaries over years of accomplishment.  Let him play in 2-3 championships and win at least one of them before talking about paying him anything close to that.

No doubt MC will be a hot commodity. While I feel he is a man loyal to his vision for Oregon, lets not be naive here. I feel 3.5 mil as a base, with incentives, is a good number for now, but should we repeat as champs, it would warrant another bump up, imo. However, since it's not my money, 4 mil sounds fine

Re: What is Cristobol Worth?

I'd give him the $4M, but it bumps down a half M with each loss to the fuskies.  I never want the fuskies to win again. Ever!

Re: What is Cristobol Worth?

I dunno.  Based on what other coaches are making . . . both within the Pac-12 and in other conferences . . . Cristobal should receive a bump in his salary.  I'd be okay with $3.5M.  What I really want to see is a solid amount of money for assistants.

Cristobal doesn't do this all on his own.  Avalos earned $765k this year.  It will go to $815k in 2020 and $865k in 2021.  I imagine he is also becoming a hot commodity and it would be great to hold onto him.  After all, Oregon paid Levitt $1.7M a year.  Isn't Avalos producing results as well as Leavitt?

Plus, with Oregon in need of a solid OC, coming up with a sizable amount of money may be warranted, if not critical.

Now, I have to stop thinking about their salaries.  It makes me feel poor.

Re: What is Cristobol Worth?

Unfortunately it is likely Oregon will have to back up the Brinks truck to keep this staff together much longer.  Interested parties will be coming after a lot of them.

I pretty much agree. The price of success. MC is the main guy: we do need to meet his needs, imo.
