The rumors have been swirling - Dillingham to ASU,and now Lanning to Auburn - and it made me wonder- which would be the better scenario for Oregon? For Lanning to stay and hire a new OC when Dillingham leaves, or for Lanning to leave and Dillingham be promoted to HC?
I’m not trying to spread rumors or even discuss whether it’s true and what we’d do if it were - I’m more just realizing out loud I don’t really know how much of the success is due to either coach.
Apologies if this is convoluted- trying to type on my phone and my tendinitis is acting up.
For example, when Chip Kelly arrived, we knew enough About Bellotti to know Chip could take us places Bellotti never could, and I don’t remember anyone doubting this. The general thought was we needed to push out Bellotti and promote Chip ASAP before another team lured him away. (not trying to compare the situations, other than to illustrate the difference in how well we know our coaches).

Preference would be to keep Lanning.
Dillingham would be a good back-up plan though.
I hope Lanning quashes this rumor hard this week. We don't need the damn distraction!!!

Well if Oregon's success continues, this is only the beginning of "coaching rumors."
That aside, Oregon simply cannot go through another head coaching hiring process...NO NO NO!
I don't know all the related details as per his contract but I have no doubt Auburn has the financial resources to pay whatever is necessary to hire him.
Everybody knows the coach is not contacted directly but rather through his agent. So I believe these rumors are largely media click baits based on "hey here is a possibility."
This situation does illustrate the risk of hiring coaches far removed from their geographic roots...home and coaching.
As for Dillingham, OC's are a dime a dozen compared to head coaches. Prior to this year, his experience and success has been limited. This is his first year calling plays on his own!
Lanning is very young at 36... Dillingham is 32! I think ASU could find a little more experienced head coach but I also don't know what Dillingham wants to do IF he was offered.

No choice but to accept it, but the uncertainty drives me crazy. I guess a lot of teams go through it every year. Funny how I used to hear fans of other teams complain about it, but I didn’t really understand what it was like.

Saban loses coaches and coordinators every year it seems. If you have a good, strong head coach you can survive the losses of your staff. Nobody questions who is in charge at Alabama. Kirby Smart won a national championship; had a bunch of players go to the NFL; his DC took the Oregon job...yet the defense looked pretty good against Tennessee. A quality head coach will attract not only recruits but also quality coaches.

He claims to have talked with Lanning and his agent.

I agree. : ) It's just at this point, when they are so new, we don't have much to go on. But then, it's always a crap shoot, even under the best of circumstances - ask Texas A&M hehe.

Canzano claims the rumors are BS:
"Oregon coach Dan Lanning not interested in Auburn opening
Don't believe the rumors...
Believe what you’d like, but I’m here to tell you that Oregon Ducks coach Dan Lanning isn’t interested in leaving Eugene.
Auburn fired football coach Bryan Harsin last week. The Tigers have hired a search firm. A writer at “Fan Nation” — part of the Sports Illustrated network — reported on Sunday that there was “mutual interest” between Auburn and Oregon coach Dan Lanning.
I promised that I would give you sourced, in-depth reporting here. Stuff you can’t get anywhere else. I can tell you whoever reported “mutual” interest didn’t bother to check with Lanning or his agent. I did. Lanning has zero interest...
But don’t take my word. Take his. He’ll be asked on Monday. Make sure you listen carefully."

That's good to hear. I sure wouldn't think he would bolt after just one year. Especially considering asking the family to move again assuming they're adjusting well.
I always thought it would take one of the blue chip programs to lure DL away in a few years. Auburn doesn't seem as big as say Georgia, but they really are a top teer. program. I'm glad they're not knocking on the door a few years down the road. Someone else will be if DL keeps up the good work.
KD is a different story and unfortunately he'll be out the door in no time. If he leaves this year we better hope Dante Moore doesn't go with him.
Should the Ducks open the checkbook and try to offer big bucks to DL for a long term contract?

1) I am not convinced Dillingham is a hot head coaching prospect at least at the P5 level. He is only 32-years old and his P5 coaching experience spans 1 year at Auburn; 2 at FSU and now his first year at Oregon. His offenses at FSU were in the bottom third of the ACC. Plus this is his first year calling plays on his own.
Assuming Nix goes after this season i.e. great season at Oregon; has a degree from Auburn; married...again next season Oregon will have a new starting QB... Dillingham may be a "rising star" but head coaching material?
2) If by long term contracts you mean like Mel Tucker, Jimbo Fisher and Mario Cristobal...NO! Too much money tied up for too long.
Every contract has exit options. Plenty of money available to buyout just about anyone. If a HC wants to leave they will find ways to leave regardless of professional and ethical dynamics. Why retain a HC who prefers to be elsewhere?
Even if Oregon was winless this season would anyone be missing Taggart or Cristobal?
I think the Oregon HC job has a direct correlation to how hard they want to work at recruiting?
Facilities, community support, etc no issues.
But the talent pool is not very deep in the Pacific Northwest and with 4 P5 schools...you have to convince kids from all over the USA to leave home. Not for every HC... especially if they can work in California, Texas, Florida, etc.
Cristobal was exceptional at it; Lanning is off to a good start.

Since we're talking rumors, a MSU insider has logged a CB to MSU on Dante Moore. I call BS, but thought I'd throw it out there. It's a crazy world in CFB these days. Buckle up

DL not only denies the Auburn job, but talks of staying with the Ducks long term.
“the last thing I ever want to do is leave” and said there is “a problem in society” with those who constantly look for their next professional opportunity.
He goes on to mention not wanting to move his 11 year old son again in addition to Oregon checking all the boxes.
Apparently the Auburn rumor started with a fan produced site. You know just like when we said Saban wanted the Ducks job after MC left😂
We'll see about the long haul as we've heard a lot of coaches talk about never leaving. For the short term things look good and just maybe DL will be a long term coach.

I was just coming here to post the same thing...obviously great minds...
He sure didn't leave any room for doubt. I really am glad he grabbed that bullshit by the horns. Go Ducks!!
