Is DL Calling Plays Now?

Josh Pate seems to think that Lupoi is not calling the play now. He didn't say DL is directly, but that's what he seems to be implying to me. I've heard other people say that DL now has a play card on his wrist while the defense is out on the field.

If this is really the case and the defense keeps playing well you have to ask if Lupoi is the right DC?

Re: Is DL Calling Plays Now?

I've been seriously doubting Lupoi as a DC the last 4 or 5 weeks.

I've heard speculation that Lanning is inserting himself more with the defensive play calling. I don't know if it's true, but it was obvious to me last week on television, how much he seemed to be involved with the defensive players while Lupoi was standing off to the side.

Any coincidence we had our best defensive performance of the year when we needed it most?

Let's see if the trend continues this week.

Re: Is DL Calling Plays Now?

I guess it is all relative but between the 3 point win over WSU and 3 point loss to the uw...all double digit wins with only UCLA reaching the 30 points scored mark.

Otherwise I believe the play calling on OFFENSE and game management(onside kick?) cost us the win against the uw(and Nix getting injured) and almost cost us the win against Utah.

My perception of the Utah game was the defense "showed up" in aggressiveness and attitude...how much that had to do with scheme and play calling I don't know.

If DL is calling the defensive plays now...well he has had one good game(Utah) based on all the complaining I have read all season long about the previous games. Does that constitute a turnaround? TBD

Personally, I think post WSU, the Ducks found the sailing smoother than anticipated on both sides of the ball...scoring in the 40's and only allowing in the 20's.

Then the uw game they felt the pressure and both players and coaches made decisions contrary to what got them to that point in the season.

Self-corrected to a degree against Utah all while playing with an injured QB.

The game tomorrow will reflect the adjustments having to be made over the last week or so.

Fully agree with that. However, if we had any defense at all in that game, it would have been enough to overcome the miscues on offense.

Have we turned a corner? Can't wait to find out on Saturday!!

Re: Is DL Calling Plays Now?

Nope we haven't. Three consecutive big games and three vastly different performances when it mattered most.

At this point beyond his job title(s) from his coaching career up to now, I have no idea what kind of head coach DL professes to be?

Disciplinarian? Motivator? X's and O's? Defensive? Innovator? What?

There is a timeless saying that goes, "The conductor doesn't play in the orchestra."

Chip Kelly was a great exception to that quote when he was at Oregon.

Cristobal was the conductor and orchestra.

I am hoping DL doesn't try to be like MC but these last 3 games...I am not sure anymore.
