This is just my opinion, but I feel this is political correctness run amok. To me, it will always be The Civil War. Fun fact, Oregon is the only state to have had a sitting senator killed in battle. Edward Baker was killed at Balls Bluff in 1861.

I'm with you Oldretiredguy.  It will always be the Civil War to me, too.  To me, sports was a way to escape from all the everyday issues everybody faces. Sports was a way to enjoy the excitement of my team winning the game.  But politics have entered into it and taken away a lot of the fun. Having said that, Go Ducks and beat the Beavers in the CIVIL WAR!

Re: "Civil War" renaming has gone nowhere

ahhhhhh . . . . damn them pointy headed perfessurs and out-of-touch academics and snobbish college elites anyways. where do they get off thinking they have any say in how a public university conducts its affairs?

I don't know which is funnier,
1) CannedZano going 0-for-6 in his entreaties to UO and OS profs (U of New Hampshire must be on semesters & winter break), OR
2) The CannedOne wading into the comments and trafficking w the same deplorables he routinely castigated while stealing paychecks at The O. (How many of those are real, and how many the creation of Canned, his family, & his 'staff'?)

We'all can call it "The Civil War" to our heart's content. A taxpayer-funded, public university belonging to the prestigious Association of American Universities, not so much. not really that hard of a concept, although nuance, thoughtfulness, and gradation are not signature pillars of shock-jock radio nor Grievance Kabuki.

Happy Turkey Day to all. embrace the spirit of thankfulness and brotherhood, our inheritance from the first shared meal among illegal immigrants and the North American aborigines whom they would later eradicate from the face of the planet.

Go Webfoots. Poop on the Barkrats.

Re: "Civil War" renaming has gone nowhere

Civil War. Period. Nothing racist, pandering or disrespectful about it to me since 1975.  The name has been used since 1929 but someone magically decides it’s suddenly wrong. I’m hoping Sasquatch will sue Canzano in Federal Court for the derogatory connotation of Bigfoot.

Re: "Civil War" renaming has gone nowhere

Changing the name seems silly to me. I still call it the Civil War.

But I'm not militant about changing the name. I honestly really don't care what the game is called.

And before we blame the politicians, wasn't this spearheaded by athletes and former athletes, some of who we revere?

Anyways, until someone comes up with a better name it will always be Civil War to me.

Re: "Civil War" renaming has gone nowhere

I've thought about it a lot, and I can't remember ever seeing or hearing - over the past 45+ years - a single thing associating the Civil War game with the American Civil War. If we were, say, waving Confederate flags in Duck or Beaver colors, I'd get it. But to my knowledge, it's never been this way at all.

The one thing I remember reading at the time they changed the name that did make sense was that some recruits from the south come from towns where people do fly and (figuratively) wave the Confederate flag, and so naturally they do associate the Civil War name game with the Confederacy.  How accurate or widespread this is, or whether it factors into the decision, I have zero idea.

One thing I will say. Our brand is known for its marketing, creativity, and innovation - but they can't think of a *#$%ing amazing new name for the game???? On the other hand, they did give us RoboDuck...

Oh man, Roboduck?? You had to go there
I agree tho, if they wanted a change, and I believe Dennis Dixon was one of the athletes wanting the change, then have another name for it. Everybody I know still calls it the Civil War.

I also call BS on the claim they haven't had time to deal with it. The team that has new uniforms each week? Really?

I can see the challenge. I don't know for sure, but my guess is the names of most long-time rivalry games developed organically, based on something local. Imposing a new concept on a tradition is difficult, and it has to be really, really good for people to accept it.

If they can't come up with a name like that, then maybe they should come up with a kind of sub-name / tagline to go with it. The problem is, the best examples that come to mind that are iconic and stick are ones like Catholics vs. Convicts, and let's face it - if it insults one of the teams, it's never gonna fly LOL. I mean, the first thing that comes to my mind for OSU for a game description like that is Sheep.

Re: "Civil War" renaming has gone nowhere

Maybe it's time for the powers that be to admit they made a mistake and just stick with Civil War?

They really dropped the friggin' ball on this one, and they obviously don't know how to recover.

Great idea, but that will never fly given where they are. Should have kept the name, confirmed it has no acceptable connotation with anything “bad” and said they will change it when they find a new, better name. Might have covered everyone’s stake.

Kind of like renaming Deady Hall. Now called “University Hall”?!  Brilliantly original.

Re: "Civil War" renaming has gone nowhere

I have never been into calling games beyond what they are...in this case for me it has always been "the Oregon State game." I have RAREY referred to it as "the Civil War." The schedule always reads, "Oregon State" or "at Oregon State." So the fact nothing has happened so far since "Civil War" was dropped is fine with me.

UCLA vs USC is nameless.

Cal vs Stanford is "The Big Game" and the winner gets an axe I believe.

UW vs WSU is the Apple Cup and the winner gets the Apple Cup trophy.

All those rivalries have done well respectively. I am fine if Oregon vs Oregon State were like USC vs UCLA...if push comes to shove I would prefer a trophy or "cup" over an object(like an axe).

Anyway, there is only one football game each year I get nervous and anxious for and that is "the Oregon State game."

Go Ducks!

Re: "Civil War" renaming has gone nowhere

The unofficial renaming of the event was nothing more than virtue signaling by a few athletes and administrators.  It was a nothing more than the State of Oregon’s sacrifice at the PC alter to garner a few headlines and approval in that particular time.  The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party and the Red River Shootout also being stricken from the official record to appease a handful of folks.  I get it.  But these things don’t last because they were never built on solid ground to begin with.  So now there’s the backlash to the backlash.  And back and forth this discussion will go every year.  I call it the Civil War as this is what it has been called in my 50+ years alive, others deliberately do not call it that and others are ambivalent.  So we call it a draw and cheer for our side to win, and that is what really pulls us together as a community anyway.
